Guest guest
I would recommend getting 91% alcohol, it's stronger. Also if it's sunny where you are, you can sit it out in the sun for a little while (foam side up) to help kill the bacteria. Hope that helps! Guest guest
Oh, and since he has a lot of hair, try using a really smelly shampoo, like Suave for Kids (we used blueberry) and that can help too. Guest guest
I would ask your orthotist, as I wouldn't want to do anything that wasn't recommended by them. My orthotist recommended making a paste with some baking soda and water and scrubbing the inside of her helmet with that. I only do it maybe once every 3 weeks or so and it works great. It does leave a bit of residue around the edges of the band for a day or so, but it takes away the smell. > > I have been scrubbing my sons band down with 70% alcohol (as > instructed) and it still gets that stinky smell. Guest guest
Our orthotist told us that in addition to alcohol we could rub the inside with a bit of whatever shampoo we use on our son, which happens to be Aveeno. I add just a tiny bit of water to the Aveeno on a washcloth, so as to spread it out without actually getting the helmet wet. It has worked really well to cut down the smell, and since it's his own shampoo it doesn't irritate him. However, ask your orthotist if this is okay before trying it!!!! By the way, we have a Starband. Kansas , in Starband since 01/05/09 > > I have been scrubbing my sons band down with 70% alcohol (as > instructed) and it still gets that stinky smell. Guest guest
our orthotist said to sprinkle baby powder CORNSTARCH inside after cleaning with alcohol. i haven't tried it yet because i was concerned about the baby breathing in the powder, but i just called our pediatrician who said it should be ok if i put the cornstarch in close to the beginning of the hour and let it absorb...and NOT to sprinkle it near the baby so he doesn't breathe it in while it is being sprinkled...but OK to have it on his head...maybe i'll try it, but so far it isn't stinky (we're only in our second week). > > > > I have been scrubbing my sons band down with 70% alcohol (as > > instructed) and it still gets that stinky smell. Guest guest
Here are the cleaning instructions directly from the Orthomerica (makers of the STARband) website: How do I clean Orthomerica Cranial Remolding Orthoses? The cranial orthoses manufactured by Orthomerica can all be cleaned with 78-99% rubbing alcohol. Wet a soft cloth with the alcohol and vigorously wipe out the entire inside of the orthosis once a day when you remove the orthosis for your baby's bath. This will help prevent bacteria from building up on the inner liner and will reduce the odour that is sometimes present. Make sure the alcohol is completely dry before placing the orthosis back on the baby's head. If you live in a sunny climate, place the band in the sun after cleaning it to help it dry. The baby's head should be washed daily with a mild baby shampoo that will not hurt the eyes. Aveeno shampoo, or Tea tree oil shampoo made by a company called can soothe some scalp irritations that can occasionally occur because of heat build-up and perspiration inside the orthosis. .. . . and from the from the Hanger website: How do I clean the Hanger Cranial Band? The soft foam lining of the Hanger Cranial Band does not absorb water or perspiration. It should be cleaned daily with a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol. Do not use soap and water; soap residue can lead to skin irritations. To help prevent irritations please make certain the band is completely dry prior to putting it on your baby.
