Guest guest
Shauna, heart murmurs are very common & often don't signify anything serious. An EKG is not always the best diagnostic tool, however. You may need an echocardiogram (sonogram of the heart) to detect such things as MVP (mitral valve prolapse; which I have. Just have to take antibiotics before surgery or dental problems). The type of murmur is important; where in the heart cycle is it heard, for instance. Ask her to describe the murmur & write it down. A grade I-II systolic murmur is usually nothing to worry about, while a grade 4 pansystolic murmur would be more concerning. Get all the info you can, including asking if an echocardiogram would be useful. It's not invasive, relatively inexpensive (compared to MRIs, etc.). I guess everyone is busy this time of year. I have been quite busy myself with appointments. I had my physical about two weeks ago and I was really discouraged by all the problems that I seemed to be facing. My protein in urine was high and and so was my blood pressure. It has been high for the last year since all of the weight gain so I have been placed on meds to control the blood pressure. I am feeling better without the headaches. It does run in my family so I had to keep it checked especially now with the steriods and weight gain. My doctor had schedule me for a glucose test but for some reason she called me back a week later and told me to cancel it. I don't know what that meant but I will ask her when I go back next week. She also said that she heard a heart murmur but none of my doctors ever said they heard that before so she is sending me to have an EKG. She also said that she heard something in my lungs and gave me a breathing treatment. I didn't notice anything with my breathing or didn't have a cough but she gave it to me anyway and prescribed an inhaler for times when I might have some breathing problems. So next week is my EKG and then I go back to see her the next day. I hope everything is alright with my heart. I know sometimes you can have sacoids in the heart but I never had a heart murmur before so I hope everything is ok. I have upped my exercise and currently walking 1 mile a day without getting out of breath on the treadmill at 3.2 speed and doing some cardio and resistance training three days a week. I really feel pretty good at the moment and I have tried to reduce my calorie and carb intake. I hope I can get this weight down without hurting anything from the increase exercise. Please pray for me as I have my EKG on Tuesday because I don't need anything else to go wrong and discourage me. Shauna in Atl. Windows Live™ SkyDrive™: Get 25 GB of free online storage.
