Guest guest
Jackie, You need to see a urologist to address the chronic issue of UTI's. If you aren't taking milk thistle, I would definately start, as that will help detoxify your liver. With the meds we're on-- it is very hard on our livers-- so if we can help it out with the load that is a good thing. One thing I know we all do especially when we are starting to deal with incontinence, is we cut back on our fluids. This is no-no. The farther you cut back, the more toxic your urine becomes-- so be kind and get some fluids (water, water, water, green teas, etc) and after the first couple of days, you'll notice that you not only are peeing more, and your urine is clearer, but you'll notice that your hands and feet aren't swelling as much. You'll also find that the incontinence gets better-- not worse. I do hope that the MD is at least doing urine cultures-- to see what kind of bug you've got that is causing the infections. That way he's not just giving you a generic antibiotic, but one that you can actually assimilate. Guest guest
Another issue with urinary problems is incontinence. Docs may prescribe drugs like Detral-LA, which can really help, but bring their own set of problems. I didn't realize how serious until my mother developed a severe UTI last year that sent her Alzheimer's progressing rapidly, from which she never recovered. She had been declining steadily for nearly a year, but at the time she developed the UTI (still in her own apartment) to her death was 6 wks. Then while my older brother was here for the funeral & a visit afterward, he developed septicemia (blood infection) from a UTI, also progressing very rapidly. The ER docs said it was because of the Detral, which decreases urine production, allowing bacteria to multiply faster. They advised him to never take it again, but otherwise he can't leave his house & he's unwilling at this point to wear "pullups" as I call them; "bloomers" as my mom called them. Anyway, keep this in mind. I'm not saying to never use these drugs, but be aware that if you do get a bladder infection, it may back up into your kidneys & even into the bloodstream very quickly. Your family needs to watch for any unusual weakness or confusion & act quickly to get medical help--and make sure that the docs/ER check for systemic infection, if they don't think of it themselves.
