Guest guest
Greetings to all! I am currently 22 weeks pregnant and found out in the last 3 weeks that my baby has bilateral clubfoot. Everything else about the little guy seems OK. Turns out that two other distant family members on my husbands side have bilateral clubfoot but never really talked about it. (It a was a shameful thing back 10-15 years ago.) WELL, I WANNA TALK ABOUT IT! I've already 'met' a few clubfoot Mom's and each one has pointed me in the right direction. One of them gave me this group name. So I wanna thank her from the bottom of my heart! I've immersed myself in as much clubfoot information as possible and have come to the conclusion that the Ponseti Method is a blessing from God. This is certainly the path I want to take for my baby since we (and I mean everyone) all want what's best for our children. I'm going to interview a few Ped Orthos in my area next week and wondered if anyone can help me out with questions that I can ask regarding their treatments. I understand that some doctors claim to use the Ponseti Method but really don't... I have found a doctor in Northern California that is a firm believer in Ponseti. (I'm in Southern Cal.) I almost just want to move up there! I'm 90% sure I want to fly up north but will hear these doctors out, just to see what they have to say. One last question, if I may....Does the severity of the clubfoot matter when using the Ponseti Method? I heard somewhere that it does, but in some of the research I've read, I understand that I really doesn't. Any help is appreciated!! THANKS SO MUCH! Can't wait to get to know everyone! Janice P.S. Sorry this is sooo long!
Guest guest
Welcome to the group Janice! And congrats on your pregnancy! Sounds like you've got a good start on your research. There is a website here: http://members.tripod.com/ponseti_links-ivil/id13.html that has a list of questions to ask doctors when you are interviewing them. The Ponseti method does work for even very severe clubfeet, although it often takes a more skilled physician who is experienced in the method. As you mentioned, there are a lot of doctors who say they are using the Ponseti method but they make radical variations in the treatment that end in less than satisfactory results. Also, you may find even a doctor who uses the method without variations just has not perfected the technique and may leave the foot/feet less than fully corrected, which makes bracing (which is essential to maintain the correction they have achieved) quite difficult, if not impossible. My basic advice is to keep gathering information, this group is an excellent source, and as you go along in the process ask questions; especially if you see something that you think could be a red flag in your child's treatment. Hope this helps answer some of your questions, and welcome again! Guest guest
Thanks , You have certainly answered my question and also given me a little more to think about, which is a good thing. Wouldn't it be great if everyone can have the ability to see Dr. Ponseti himself!? Looks like we're going to have to trust the list of certified drs. and our gut instincts! Thanks! Guest guest
You're welcome Janice. It is really wonderful for those who are treated by Dr. Ponseti himself, I met him myself recently and he was just amazing. The good part is that by all of us parents being educated on the proper treatment protocol we can actually help the doctors who are learning the method too. It is really refreshing to see some of these docs who are just learning the method to see how they actually welcome the input from parents. It seems to be a unique identifier in the doctors who are truly dedicated to the method -- they seem to be more open to feedback and taking the time to interact with the parents. To me, I think that should be one of the key things to look for when chosing a Ponseti doctor; it is the doctors who are not willing to take the time to really listen who seem to have the most trouble with the method! Best of luck in choosing a doctor and for the rest of your pregnancy! > > > > > > Greetings to all! > > > > > > I am currently 22 weeks pregnant and found out in the last 3 > weeks > > > that my baby has bilateral clubfoot. Guest guest
Hi Janice- I just saw your post. My son was treated in Tarzana, CA by Dr. King. I think my son is the only child in the group today treated by him. Where in So Cal are you? If you can see him, please do. He is certified and my son's Unilateral Clubfoot is properly corrected. I have even sent pictures to Dr. Ponseti, who confirmed this. If your are going to see Dr. King please let me know so I can give you some tips. According to the several Pediatricians I spoke with, Dr. Kingis the best Ped Orthopedic in So Cal. He is however, lacking bedside manner... this was an issue for my husband and I on our first visit (when our son was 3 days old, we did not know before his brith of clubfoot). I wish I had been warned. BUT... I wouldn't change a thing. Let me know. Good Luck, Stacie bruinbelle29 wrote: Greetings to all! Guest guest
Thanks for the info, Stacie! I'm in LA and since I'm covered by my HMO, its kinda twisting my arm to go with our own drs. Lucky for me that Dr. Colburn is in my insurance group. I've heard wonderful things about him and I'm actually very excited about meeting him. Granted I have to fly up to the Bay Area but what's a little sacrifice. Having a certified ponseti within hours from me would have been fantastic! Glad to hear that your son's foot is properly corrected. That's now music to my ears. Thanks again! Janice > > Hi Janice- > I just saw your post. My son was treated in Tarzana, CA by Dr. King.
