Joline, I just paid $296.00 for my son's 3rd pair of shoes. He is 26 months old

and has only used two pair to date (starting at 2 months old), we are starting

his 3rd pair now which just came in the mail today. A side note though - this

price was for only the shoes - I believe the bar costs extra, but once you buy a

bar, you only replace shoes and keep using the same bar so it's a one-time

expense.

DBB shoes - how much & how many?

How much are the DBB Shoes and how often do they go through them in

the first year of life?

Our daughter started the casting process this morning. She has a very

mild clubbed foot. We'll start the shoes when the casts are finished.

I'm wondering how much they are and how many she'll need in the first

year so I can figure out our medical spending account for next year.

TIA!

I'm sorry, I thought you meant s, I didn't read that closely. Yes, I

was quoting the Ponseti- shoe, thanks for the correction.

s.

Joline,

Those are the costs for the custom made shoes. The Markell

shoes are more inexpensive because they're off-the-shelf.

I can't give you cost estimates on those as I haven't purchased them

for a while. You just have to ask your doctor what they intend on

using!

Joline,

I am thinking our first set of shoes was over $200. After that if you have

adjustable bar, you will only need to replace the shoes. I don't know for sure

but am thinking it was under $200. We have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Iowa and

they covered all but $32 on first set then we pay $21.75 for just the shoes. We

use Markell shoes on the bar. Hope this helps.

We're in Canada.. It's 115 for each pair in Canadian funds. Karston's gone

through 4 pair of shoes in the last 14 months, and one bar at 125.00.

They last a long time, because of the open toes. My daughter is 5 years

old, and has had sizes 1, 3, 5, 7 and 8. So, only 5 pairs in 5 years.

Our insurance covered them most of the time, but for some reason $64

sticks in my mind. it might've changed, and might be different

depending on whom you buy them from. but they shouldn't be all that

expensive. they are not that much different from regular, old-

fashioned, white, leather soled Stride Rite type baby shoes.

here's a brochure from Markell, just fyi,

Good luck!

Our set (a bar and shoes) was $170 and so far she's been wearing it for about

4-5 months and still has a bit to go. The bar is still plenty wide so next we

will just have to replace the shoes, not the bar (the shoes were $120 and the

bar was $50). Good luck! I know the price can vary, but I think what we paid is

about average.

You should be able to contact the orthotics department directly, or

wherever you will be getting the shoes from. They can tell you how

much they bill insurance, and what codes they use. Then, call the

insurance company and ask how much will be covered. My insurance pays

for the bar in full, but I have to pay for a percentage of the costs

for the shoes. Funny though, we're on our second pair of shoes, and

the clinic hasn't billed us for any shoes at all yet!

My son will be 1 on Thanksgiving. He's on his second pair of shoes.

We figure he'll need the third sometime after Christmas, which would be

about a year after he started wearing the shoes.

Hope that helps!

I'm not sure what shoes we will use. I didn't know there was more

than one kind so I didn't ask. She was nursing when they looked at

her foot so I forgot to ask at our appointment more about the shoes.

She's 2 weeks old now and got her first cast yesterday.

Thanks much. It does give me an idea.

Also, regarding insurance, be persistent if you have to be. Our insurance

initially said the cost of the item would be applied toward a $200 deductable

and the only thing that counted towards that was the bar (they have a blanket

statement that they do not pay for shoes in any way, shape, form, for any

reason), but after making many phone calls and explaining how the bars and shoe

functioned as a unit and the bar was useless without the shoes (unless they

wanted to pay for her to have screws surgically implanted on her heels), they

agreed to pay for the bar and shoes 100% (not just applied toward a

deductable!), so the time and aggravation was worth it!

Of course, we will have a different insurance company in January so I'll get to

start all over again...ugh!

Thanks- I think our current insurance will cover them 100%. I did

call them and since they are medically necessary they will cover

both the bar and shoes. With BCBS, it's 80/20 so we'd pay the 20%

once we hit our deductible and I'm sure we will before we get our

second pair of shoes. I was afraid since they were orth. shoes they

wouldn't cover them, but they will. YEAH!

Also, my husband told me that his medical spending can roll over

year to year so we did put more money into them and will use mine

first.

Thanks to everyone who responded!

I'm anxious to see how her foot looks next week. They had it back to

straight when they were putting on her first cast. Do they over

correct in the casts? I'm just trying to judge how many casts she'll

need. Her foot is very flexible. We're hoping to avoid the

tendonotomy, but if she needs it of course, we'll do it.
