Judith Thamm:

I read your reference to a Web site

in which the author minimized the effect of aspartame, claiming that the

problem was a sensitivity to citric acid.

Be advised that most citric acid is produced from corn. In the

production of

citric acid, producers do not take the time nor undertake the expense of

removing all protein. During production, the protein is hydrolyzed,

resulting in some processed free glutamic acid (MSG).

Many MSG-sensitive people report adverse reactions that they normally

associate with MSG ingestion from food products that contain citric

acid.

You likely know that neuroscientists have determined, in studies on

laboratory animals, that glutamic acid (the reactive component of the

food

ingredient " monosodium glutamate " and over 40 other food ingredients

with

names that provide no clue to its presence) and aspartic acid

(approximately

40% of aspartame) load on the same receptors in the brain, cause

identical

brain lesions and neuroendocrine disorders, and act in an additive

fashion.

People who react to MSG typically react similarly to aspartame and vice

versa, providing that they ingest amounts that exceed their tolerances

for

the substances.

This report by a team at a VA hospital describes 4 cases of

fibromyalgia that were cured by giving up all MSG and aspartame.
