Guest guest
Hi, Me again! We saw Dr. Herzenberg today. Apparently, Christian's tendon is not nearly as strong on the outside part of the foot. He isn't putting any pressure near his big toe when he walks. Dr. H wants me to do these exercises with Christian and when he comes back in March they will determine then if he needs to have the tendon transfer. Well, I gotta tell ya, I am a little surprised by this whole thing. What are my odds? 50/50? I should have asked him that. I am really very scared about the whole thing. I know that I should just focus on the exercising and worry about it when we go back but now I am going to be paranoid about this for 4 months. Guest guest
, I have a severe clubfoot treated surgically. I am 42 years old and have extensive experience with both tendon transfers and the miracles that simple excercises can perform when faithfully done. I have benefited significantly from the faithful practice of the " simple " excercises the physical therapist taught me. They strengthened muscles that I do not use in daily life and have improved my quality of life. I have also probably had six or more tendon transfers (frankly, I have lost count). These are the simplest surgeries and the least painful (it was much worse having my tonsils out---no kidding). They can make a huge difference in regards to providing the support your son may need. I have never been the parent of a child with clubfoot and cannot imagine what it must be like for you. Which ever avenue works for Christian, it will work out okay. Please try not to be too frightened. Your time, energy and support for your children are amazing and believe me that dedication does make a difference for your child. Your family will be in my prayers!--- > > Hi, > > > > Me again! We saw Dr. Herzenberg today. Apparently, Christian's tendon is > not nearly as strong on the outside part of the foot. Guest guest
Hi , I'm sorry to hear that Christian may need the tendon transfer, that is what Collin had on 9/30 at the University of Iowa, I just e-mailed photo's to the CFPIC's group he had his cast removed today. I always thought tendon transfers were done on older kids after they were done with the FAB because the tendon never finished developing. I am so surprised because Christian is still younger. If you need to vent you know it's deffiantly ok to e-mail me! Again, I'm sorry for the disapointing news. Guest guest
That's so rotten Michele. Hindsight is 20/20 but there are days I wish it were blind, don't you? s. ----- Original Message ----- Collin, had his calf muscle (or tendon) split in half and moved when a baby to try to lengthen his achiles tendon and that is why he has had so many problems since. They did this to him at 8 weeks old before we knew there were options, etc. If that never happened his foot would probably be fine today also. Guest guest
I wanted to add that the one tendon surgery that was a 100% failure for me (I had it either 2 or 3 times) was when they split the tendon and moved half of the tendon to another location. That one surgery is responsible for the high number of surgeries I have had. No one on any of the clubfoot sites has mentioned this surgery (I hope it is not done anymore). If this is mentioned for your child,......run for another opinion.--- > > > > Hi, > > > > > > > > Me again! We saw Dr. Herzenberg today. Guest guest
OMG ! I am so sorry that happened to Collin. I can't believe they still do that! It has to be that the docs just don't question enough. I have a hard time believing they have ever seen success story with that method. I was told at a later date that one reason for the failure rate is that it is impossible to split the tendon perfectly 50-50. The larger side of the tendon tends to " draw up " and the smaller side tends to stretch, that was what happened to me repeatedly. You know what though...........you make the best decisions possible at the time with the information you have. You can't beat yourself up. The most important thing is that you all are in a good place now. > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Me again! We saw Dr. Herzenberg today.
