Yes, I have given melatonin for several years, and I took it for a

year or so. doesn't seem to evidence nightmares from it and

neither did I; but I did find that I remembered dreaming more, and I have

a friend who had to stop taking it because she was bothered by really

strange dreams. I think it is hard to discontinue for some people. When

I discontinued it for myself, I was fine for the first week or so, then

had a couple of weeks where it was hard to sleep, then have been fine

every since, though I still remember dreaming more than before I took the

melatonin. I've tried reducing ''s melatonin gradually and we've

allways hit that sleeplessness wall in the second week; since the need for

sleep (hers and mine) was the greater issue, I've given up on reduction

for now. I think it can be reduced or discontinued but you should be

prepared for some sleep problems during the transition.

I would not assume though that it has no delitirious effects. Many on the

autism mercury list have reported their their bottle of melatonin has a

warning that it should not be used for children under 18. It is also a

hormone and it has the potential of causing your body to stop making that

hormone on its own -- why some have taper it to avoid reaction. Sounds like

that doesnt always work from a couple of the posts. My point just being

that I think it is something that deserves research before assumption that

it is okay....just my opinion ....after years of docs telling me that vacs

are safe, flouride is safe, mercury thermometers breaking inside a childs

bottom is okay (this happened to my girlfriends baby girl--today she has the

worst case of athma and allergies I have ever seem...mmm) ....anyway, I dont

trust easily now and would not assume that it is harmless, :)

We used it for a while, and it seemed to help him straighten out his own

sleep cycle and now we no longer need it- we had no real problems stopping

it-I tapered it out of his system over the course of a few days. I did a

search on effects of melatonin and the only thing I could find is the fact

long term effects on puberty has not been studied. I did not run across any

other warnings so I used it. Our developmental peditritian was the one who

reccomended it and said it had no adverse afffects to her knowledge. Lis aF
