Guest guest
I'm wondering more what you mean about the feet look like they are turning in. I find myself staring boldly at normal baby feet when they are bare footed for comparrison reasons - and I see a lot of normal feet that turn in quite a bit at a relaxed time, like hanging down from a high chair or sitting on the floor. With out knowing what a normal foot would do it's easy to get paranoid about your clubbed foot, is it responding correctly??? Ah, the pressure! LOL! I consider Everett to have excellent correction now at age 2, yet with out the brace on his feet do turn in some what, but all feet do that, and baby feet seem to look more extreme than adult feet in this regard cuz they're little. With all that said, my main advice here is to follow your Mommy Instinct - know one knows that baby better than you! A too short bar is not good, you need to correct that and do make sure the shoes are set at their proper degrees - that is 70 degrees out and ten degrees up I believe. Ask your doctor what degrees he is prescribing and make sure your shoes are indeed set correctly; try to get an adjustable bar, also, to replace the one that is out grown. Somehwere in our files/links sections there is the Ponseti Protocol for bracing - you could print that and take it with you to the dr. and ask how his protocol compares to it, and if it differs, well, that's a warning sign so find out why he might prescribe different use times. good luck. s. Re: Foot Doesn't Look Right Stacey, If you are only taking his shoes off for an hour a day, his feet should not turn back in within that hour. Does he cry when you put the shoes back on? Are the shoes set at 70 degrees? If the shoes are set correctly, and he isn't in any pain (you would know otherwise), then I would say you may just be overly worried. The bar length is a big deal as well. It should be approximately shoulder width. I am worried the doctor is leaving it up to you to decide when the shoes should be reduced. Have you thought about a second opinion? HTH. celldancer wrote: has been wearing the DBB for 3 months now. I have learned from this site that according to the Ponseti protocol we should be able to cut down his time in the shoes now to 20 hours. I am concerned though because lately I have noticed that when the shoes are off for the hour his clubfoot starts to turn in and up a little more than it had in the past. We are scheduled to see the doctor this Friday. I am just not sure of all the correct questions to ask while I am there. Originally our doctor said we could use our own judgement when taking out of the shoes which I know is not correct since there is a protocol to follow. Also, 's bar is too short for him now. Would this cause any problems with the foot other than him being uncomfortable? I am so afraid of relapse. My friend who is a physical therapist said that when starts to bear weight on his foot the position should be fine. I guess I am wondering if anyone else experiences the foot turning back in when the shoes come off and any questions I should be sure to ask when I go on Friday. I need to be prepared with this doctor since he tends to move pretty fast. Thank you, Stacey Mom to 7/8/05 LCF DBB 23/
Guest guest
one of the great things about unilateral is that you can see how babies normally do have slightly turned in feet and compare it to the other. yeah, do look at other baby feet to check that out, they all look kinda funny like that. I always thought I'd be paranoid if I was mom of a bilateral child. I was always comparing her two feet while out of the shoes and sure enough... the normal one did it too. As did my other children's feet lol. But... talk to the doc about it. And look for yourself. The best way to check if the foot is turning in is to look at it weight bearing. Weight bearing is important, and look at the feet from the front and back to see if you see rolling or inward pointing while she's standing. I know she's little, but you can just stand her up and take a look see. This is how Dr. Ponseti consults, he wants pics from front and back weight bearing, soles and dorsiflexion (profile view, use your palm to push toes up to head as far past " L " as possible). Can tell a lot from pics like this. And, if you do have a camera handy just take the pics while you're looking and have them ready to send to Dr. Ponseti if needed. You never know... sometimes I'm sure people hear back from him that everything is fine lol. That'd be great You're right on with the bracing though, doc should not leave that up to you. If left up to parents... well this method will never work. We so don't want to use that thing at first. no, doc should tell parents flat out... MUST wear brace long hours. that's just sad. How many other parents there have been set up for failure like this I wonder? :~{ like ee said, you can always find another doc for a second opinion if you feel something's up. We moms are usually right about things when we're uncomfortable with our children, even if it isn't the feet but rather the doc...
