Guest guest
Pam, Not only do I get the urge from time to time, but I indulge!! The difference is that much less satisfies me. I'll have one of those Hershey's miniature chocolates, maybe two, then I'm done. I always get my protein first, and my vitamins, but then I have whatever I want. I didnt do this to diet the rest of my life. I dont feel out of control, I'm very relaxed about my eating now. And my surgery is working just fine, -48lb in 9 weeks. Sometimes I just don't feel like eating or get full really quickly and can't finish something. Then, I will find myself snacking. I eat similar things that Steve mentioned (pretty high protein - except that I love Pistachios and so far I haven't experienced any ill effects. I found out they actually come in HUGE 2lb bags, too and I got two bags two weeks ago - almost done with the second. Of course, my kids help me out here). I'll also snack on non-high protein stuff on occasion, but I try to stick to the high protein and/or ensure that my protein is gotten with meals and/or shake/supplement. I've found that I am most likely to NOT want to eat on plateaus -- when my body slows down and tries to retain nutrients. Then, I become quite ravenous (although I could never eat as much as pre-op) when I start losing again! If I'm eating well (ie. a solid meal three times a day), I don't find a great need to snack in between except in the late afternoon (we usually have dinner a bit late). I am full with my meals and satisfied. But, I will snack more frequently when I eat much smaller amounts and don't really have 'square meals' at any time. My snacks often include low fat yogurt, soy nuts, peanuts/almonds/pistachios/cashews, cheese, cottage cheese, fruit.... Needless to say, I DO EAT when I'm hungry. Sometimes a solid meal will satisfy my hunger wheras other times I just cannot eat that much and get hungrier faster as a consequence. all the best, lap ds with gallbladder removal January 25, 2001 Dr. Gagner, Mt. So, I would like to know, please, is this true for some > of you? And if it is, how have you, or did you handle it? > Pam in MD Hi Pam - I've definitely had to make some adjustments to my eating schedule, and while I don't know if I'd call it snacking, per se, it's been somewhat difficult and definitely different than what I expected. My answer is sorta rambly (as is my wont), and has a couple questions to add to yours at the end, for anyone up to reading it. Prior to DS (I'm almost 10 weeks out), my usual eating regimen would go something like this: about 6:30 or 7 a.m., I'd have a bagel with cc, or a danish, and 6 shots of espresso over ice. Lunch at noon was a 50/50 proposition - half of the time I'd have none, and half of the time I'd get a quick pita sandwich or slice of pizza or salad, etc. Dinner, somewhere between 7-9pm, was where I had a big meal. Usually I got take-out or ate out, and it could be anything: sushi, a burger, burrito, Asian or Italian foods, fish, etc. - but it was usually a big meal because by that time I'd be hungry, esp if I'd had no lunch. Since I don't have a kitchen at home, if I ate at home it may have been a deli sandwich or just a bag of chips! Rarely would I indulge in sweets....if I had a bag of cookies in the house, it would usually be thrown out a month later. Now, after DS, I get hungry every 2-4 hours! I have found it sooooo annoying to have to give thought to a high-protein meal 3-5 times per day, in very small quantity. It's been difficult lifestyle-wise for me, and I have not enjoyed the task of packing up stuff to take to work (esp since the convenient stuff is the least palatable, IMHO). The convenience items I've found tolerable include pistachios, yogurt, protein bars, instant mashed potatoes/bean soup from Trader Joe's. Probably my biggest " binge " item prior to DS was potato chips. With or without a sour cream dip. Since I unfortunately have oily discharge, I have avoided these high-fat items like the plague, but in truth have not craved them much. I've found since DS, I've wanted sugary things more than before, but I think it's still pretty minor. I've had one mini chocolate eclair since surgery, and usually once a day add a splash of cranberry juice to a glass of water. That's been it. Oh - and I had some Coke cravings after surgery when I was so nauseated and had one a day for a while, but that's over, finally...never liked sodas much anyway. What I miss most is: my daily 6 shots of espresso over ice, with a half-inch of 1/2 & 1/2!!! Also cheeses!!! Darn, I LOOOVE good cheeses: blues and smelly old cheddars and goudas and goat cheeses/chevres, and limbergers, herbed bries, camenberts, etc. Even the thought of Shropshire bleu makes my mouth water! Alas, I am just too annoyed by my oily anal discharge to attempt them, although I desperately hope later on I'll be able to. When did people attempt a small steak? I'm afraid it will sit in my belly like lead, but I've been craving that. Does the frequent hunger dissipate for people further out? I was quite happy eating usually twice a day, and would love to have that be the regular deal again. Pam, thanks for your question, although I'm not sure I've provided any real answers. Thanks also to everyone who bothered to read my rambles this far, and TIA for answers to my questions, as well as to Pam's. - SC

I eat steak at least one, often twice a week! I love it. I think it is responsible for my iron levels being so good also!! Guest guest
Hi SC! You asked: When did people attempt a small steak? I'm afraid it will sit in my belly like lead, but I've been craving that. I started eating fillet mignon and prime rib at about 2-3 months out. It was so delicious and I tolerated it well. We eat steak often now. I firmly believe if you are craving steak then your body needs it! Listen to your body!! Give it what its craving.......!! One way you can get around the daily grind of preparing proteins 3-5 times a day is to go vegetarian a little bit. You can get some good proteins from bean dishes and things like that. I often have refried beans with black olives, chiles, green onions and those kind of things mixed in the beans and add some sirloin ground beef to that too. Then sprinkle on any kind of cheeses you like (the more the better) and top that with sour cream and avacado and eat with fritos scoops! Wonderful protein packed meal!! Or, just have a luna bar or shake if you are really lazy! I too go thru the frequent hunger and Im 9 months out.....I find it irritating sometimes too and miss the satiety I once had and not needing more than a couple meals a day...... I think the closer you get to your goal the hungrier you are and the weight just begins to slow wayyyyyyyy down! Perhaps thats natures way of making sure you dont keep losing weight until you disappear! Judie

I can tolerate it too, provided it's at least medium rare, or a twinge closer to rare. I'm 8 weeks out today.

Well, I am a bit disappointed to think I won't be back down to eating once or twice a day any time soon, then. O, well. There are worse alternatives. *g* - SC, kinda chatty today in case ya noticed
Guest guest
SC....dont give up now.....you just might get the satiety back later, Im guessing anyway. (I hope we do!) But as long as we do not gain, who cares if we end up eating alot more? <g> I know exactly what you mean though and I dont care for cooking either becuz I cooked for 38 yrs and sometimes i get very sick of it! So, things like shish kabobs, steak, grilled salmon, barbqued chicken....those things are quick and so good for us that we rarely have to have other things with it even if its 4-5 times a day. When I get sick of cooking anything I will have a protein drink....gets the protein in and satisfies me for about 2 hours.....(by the way when you make shish kabobs, make enough so that you have some for breakfast and dinner the next day!!!! its wonderful at breakfast time!!) As for the steak....make sure you use tender steaks like the mignon and dont cook them to death becuz that might be where the sitting like a rock will come from! We grill ours till they are just a little red and juicy and oh yummmmmmmmm! Delish! We can eat an 8 ounce steak now and sometimes a 12 ouncer! (with the 12 ouncer, we eat nothing else with it) Judie
