Guest guest
Hey Jen, welcome to the group! Sounds like you might have a mess on your hands. Your baby shouldn't cry this way with the FAB on, so something's not right here. Your message leaves a lot of things un-said that might be of help if we knew the whole story so forgive us all in advance of sounding nosey, OK? We're just trying to help you figure out what's gone wrong here. You say he was treated by the Ponseti Method, can we ask who your doctor was? He doesn't sound " Ponseti " to me because a true P-doctor wouldn't perform a surgery this young and this early into corrective attempts. Less than a year old a Ponseti Doc would have attempted to re-cast the foot. How long was your son casted before surgery? About how many casts were used? What " club foot surgery " did your son have? Was it a heel cord lengthening (tenotomy) or something more? How old was he when he had it done? Had you used the FAB (dbb) at all prior to the surgery? OK now on to the FAB - is the bar set as shoulder width? It should be as wide as his shoulders. If you need help figuring the measurement let us know. Being set wrong could hurt. You say only Right foot has surgery - what was happening to the Left foot while the Right was in a cast? Was the Left foot casted during this time too, or left free? If the Left foot was left alone, un casted, un braced, during the time his Right foot was ina cast, the Left probably suffered a major relapse and WON'T fit in the FAB shoes with out pain. What degree were the feet set at in casts? Did the toes point out to 70 degrees? The FAB should hold the feet to 70 degrees (toes pointed outward) but if the foot wasn't " trained " to do 70* in a cast, they sure won't fit in in a 70* FAB with out pain. Um ya, there are a lot of variables here to sort out! LOL! Sorry don't mean to freak you out with a ton of questions but it's hard to just say XYZ will fix your problem with out knowing the history prior to FAB use. My guess right off the bat is the left foot is no longer corrected and is hurting in the FAB. My opinion is this: If the FAB is causing your kid This much distress, something is up and I'd take it off of him till I figured out what that was. Discomfort, irritation, frustration, those are normal for a few days even a week but down right inconsolible crying is not normal. The 2 1/2 hours you manage to get in a day really isn't enough to help anyway. Let us know more and we'll all pitch in with ideas, OK? ALSO - check out the other (original) Ponseti group called nosurgery4clubfoot for tons more information, ideas, support and when you go there, seriously look in to the Links and Files sections for tons of scientific information about the condition and treatment methods, options, tips for wearing the FAB and anything else. I'm forwarding your note on over there if you don't mind so others can pitch in to give you a hand with this because it's just not sounding like a typical Ponseti Treatment case to me. shawnee 2 cf boys and one more on the way! [PonsetiMethod] Denis Brown Bar Hello everyone! I am new to this group, mom to an almost 1 year old boy with bilateral clubfoot. We did the Ponseti casting on both legs, which worked for the left, but not the right. He had the clubfoot surgery on the right in October and is finally out of casts. We are trying the DBB and having a rough time. We picked it up on Friday and was unable to get him in it. After much research I found out I could remove the shoes from the bar, put them on, and then reattach it. I was able to put it on in 10 mins! I was feeling pretty proud of myself!! Only problem is he cries non stop with it on. Last night I lasted 2 1/2 hours. Right now we're going on 2 1/2 of him crying non stop again. Is this normal? He made a little peep when I put the shoes on (was distracted by a bottle) and not a sound when I connected them to the bar. He was fine for 15 mins, then it started. He's 2 hours past his normal bed time, and is still screaming. Last night after removing the shoes I checked his feet over and they looked fine- only a little red which I think is to be expected. So I felt like I shouldn't have removed them. My husband put the brace on today by himself, but only left it on for an hour. The doc said just at night, but with the way he's acting at night, we're thinking any time is great. Sometimes I feel like he's crying because he's mad that he can get comfortable, but then when the crying never stops, I think it could be something else..... The most he's stopped crying is 5 min (just long enough for me to say a thank you prayer). Nothing seems to work. Not rocking, singing, rubbing his back, or co- sleeping. He'll quiet for a few mins, then straighten his legs and start all over again. Did anyone else have this problem? How long does it take for them to get used to it? Thanks in advance!
