Guest guest
I was thinking about this today - drinking meat tenderizer. I can't even imagine doing that now to my big untouched stomach, but to a tiny " pouch " left from RNY? I still think that would be messing with the health in a big way. Do their Dr.s know they are doing this? Carole

People with a pouch have a small (sometimes a quarter inch) stoma (opening) into their intestines. Food not chewed to a pulp can become lodged, esp meats. It can be incredibly uncomfortable, and in some cases, has to be removed endoscopically. When someone has such a blockage, drinking a little Adolph's meat tenderizer in water, which helps break down the proteins in the meat, can often dislodge it. Ideally, the pouch lining would protect it from being damaged by the meat tenderizer. The stuff contains enzymes, which help cleave proteins and which *themselves* are usually destroyed in the stomach (the enzymes). I dunno how chronic use of it affects the pouch since the pouch is not too stomach-like any more, but RNYers seem to do pretty well with it. An alternative might be a couple bites of paw paw or pineapple or papaya, since they all have papain in them. I don't know if this can be a contributor to " marginal ulcers " some people with pouches get. - SC, still rambling
