My cousin came over today so she could donate blood for my surgery and while

we were there, there was a daughter and father ahead of us both donating

blood. When they were done the daughter started talking to us and she said

that her and her father were donating blood for their mother who was in the

hospital. I casually asked if their mother was having surgery and that's

when the father went on a tirade. Now keep in mind, he has no idea that I am

getting WLS surgery. He said his wife had a Lap RNY in Brooklyn on June 26th

by Dr. Ferzli and wound up in ER a few days after her release and has been

there ever since. She is on a ventilator, being kept sedated and needs

transfusions. I don't know all of the details. He was ranting how horrible

gastric bypass is and then he went on to say that the surgeon on Staten

Island (Macura but kept calling him Macurio) " killed " four people! He went

on to say that he has seen so many WLS patients in intensive care. Now I

think we all go to intensive care after surgery for a day but am not sure.

Anyway, this really shook me up today. I actually started having doubts and

wondering if I am taking to big of a risk. I doubt his info was accurate but

it still shook me up. Anyway, thanks for letting me vent.

Lisbeth - Do you recall if you went straight to the bariatric ward after

surgery or were you in ICU first?

I'm sure it did...its hard not to when he's got a wife in the ICU. Not

everyone goes to the ICU but it depends on your surgeon and probably your

weight and issues. I didn't but I know many do just as a precaution. Just

remind yourself he was upset due to his wife not doing well...which is

understandable. He's going to obviously bash the surgeon, the surgery, etc

because he's helpless...its all he has at the moment. Hang in

there....you're going to be FINE!!!!

The demand for WLS has gone through the roof since the Carnie

publicity etc. Many WLS surgeons are booked for months to come. New

surgeons are cropping up all over.

All surgeries have risks. I could tell you horror stories from

gallbladder surgeries, hernia repairs etc. (I've been an ER nurse for

18 years).

The MO population often carry higher risk factors such as diabetes,

high blood pressure etc, that make them a higher risk population.

I've been lurking on AMOS more lately, and there's all kinds of

folks with serious complications being discussed right now.

Remember, though, that thousands of these surgeries are performed

safely every year. The odds are overwhelmingly in our favor to do

well.

Dont let these stories make you lose your focus. Be as informed and

educated as possible, and prepare as much as you can to handle

complications should the arise.

Its a huge leap of faith to have this surgery. It required more

courage than any other decision I have made.

I understand your fears, and running into a guy who's wife is in ICU

is the last thing you need at a time like this.

Listen to your heart, you'll make the right choice.

Good luck, Meli -48lb in 9 weeks

Thanks. That's what I keep telling myself. The coincidence was just really

odd. 12 more days to go!

It would be strange not to be getting apprehensive...this is a major

procedure...but remember the 100's of us that did great! Everyone marvels at

the way I've bounced back....and I know there are lots more besides me! I

was at the dr's asking for drugs the final 3 weeks before surgery...I was

having panic attacks and so stressed!! I had to deal with flying...which I'm

terrified of....a country I'd never been to..heck I've never been anywhere

but Canada! I had major surgery and have never before....and I survived...so

I know you'll do great!!! Take deep breaths....find some things or people

that relax you...focus on the aftermath....

You're going to do great!!!

> I also had my DS with Dr. Macura. I woke up in the recovery room and

after a while, I was taken to my room.

> I don't know why this man brought up Dr. Macura with you since his wife

was operated on by a different doctor. It's something that we don't want to

think about, but all surgeons have had their share of deaths. Dr. Macura

has been doing WLS for over 10 years, when I saw him the first time last

Nov. I asked about his mortality rate and was told it was less than 0.5% in

the last few years. This is a very good rate. I know he is an

exceptionally thorough surgeon and caring. Please don't let this man scare

you. It is understandable that he was upset and will lash out at anyone who

he perceives as a factor in his wife's condition.

> Rita Black

I was also thinking it could have been a Dr. Murcurio, just as the man said,

as well. Probably lotsa RNY and other kinds of surgeons around.....
