Guest guest
Hi all, Enjoying reading all the informative emails. I just found out I am going to be REscheduled for my consult. I hope it's not too much later than the original Sept 13th date. ARgh... I'm getting anxious, excited, scared all the regular stuff -- but I " m ready for this. I'm curious about something: I have high-ish cholesterol and triglicerides and low HDLs. All bad stuff for heart disease risk factors. While I understand fats don't get digested as much, what about these things? I am concerned that as much as I love red meat and proteins, what about the cholesterol? I know people say it's gone down for them, but I am just wondering if it is also malabsorped? I thought fats were slightly different than cholesterol. Thanks -- notice I have finally changed my signature to something that actually defines me in the DS world! That actually was a big step for me... Hawkins Preop / BMI 60 150 lbs bound! Consult Sept. 13 Rabkin in SF ****** Hoping soon for a switcheroo! *******
Guest guest
The data is clear that the malabsorptive procedures are the most effective and eliminating lipud disorders and diabetes.>>>>>> wonderful, Chris! Thanks for this information and when you said Atkins attributes it to increased sugar consumption in addition to eating fats too, that rang a bell!! Makes perfect sense! I remember Dr Welker telling me once that this alone was a marvelous tool to not only get cholesterol levels down but to make blood sugars normal for type 2 diabetics. Guest guest
Our livers make cholesterol even if we don't eat it because cholesterol is necessary -- it's part of cell membranes and the precursor to most hormones, including the sex hormones. HOWEVER, if you eat a lot of it *or* if you have a liver that's pumping it out in overtime, you're at serious risk for heart attack, stroke, and a bunch of other very nasty things. Dr. Atkins has his head up his butt wrt some things, cholesterol being one of them. If you have a normal, healthy body, you can eat cholesterol with no problem...but not without *any* limits. alyssa Re: Cholesterol anyone? > Alyssa, > I dont know much about it and I certainly am no expert but our livers make > cholesterol even if we dont eat foods containing cholesterol or fats, > right? > And according to Dr Atkins......cholesterol is not a bad thing....its only > bad when it comes from the bad sources (like processed foods) and not from > eggs or animal sources. Can you cite the study for me? This would be helpful information in appealing if I get denied by Cigna. My cholesterol levels are sky high, and although moderately controlled with meds, there are no super long-term studies on what Lipitor does to your liver over the 60 years that I will be taking these meds...I would dearly love to throw my cholesterol meds out the window!! alyssa
Guest guest
I think put Atkins in good perspective here when he said " sugar " ......sugar is the culprit and not just the cholesterol we eat. Once when I quit eating sugar I saw my cholesterol level plummet......eat sugar and back up it goes! So there is something to be said for that. But after surgery most of us dont have this problem anymore. My cholesterol went fro 273 pre opt to 135 now! Wayyyyyyy below what the experts consider normal. If I had a 140 point drop in my levels, I'd be off meds for sure!! alyssa

I know a gal whose cholesterol went down to 45 and her doc " begged " her to get it up by eating more fats! Can you imagine? Judie
Guest guest
Hmmn.. now I'm really curious.. my cholesterol is always low (150-180), no matter what I eat.. if I take niacin, I can drop it to 80.. I'm curious now to see what if any effect my surgery has on my cholestreol level.. I'm one of those lucky few that are genetically predisposed to not make cholesterol, lol.. I guess I need to get my labs done & see, huh(its time- 3 months)? curious, Liane > WOW!!! Then there's hope for me!!! At 200, they start talking about lowering it through diet. At 275 or so, they'll start talking about lowering it via meds. alyssa
