Guest guest
I just read a post saying people are taking almost a dozen vitamins a day!!!! (another board)....What is that all about? Randy and I go to the Vitamin Shoppe, we have a multivitamin (pineapple flavored chewable), Iron (sweettart cherry flavor)chewable and subligual B12 (randy's is plain, mine is lemon flavored)...That's all. Randy did need potasium once for about a week or two, and then that ended.... There is no better feeling in the world than not having to take meds, whether they are vites or not....why would someone choose to take so many? Don't labs dictate what is needed? Am I just a lucky minoroty or what? (oh yeah, we do take prilosec every day also...thats a given) How is everyone else doing this? I'm wondering? It seems to me that dozens of vites are just like substituting pills for food...one addiction for another? Sue in Palmdale
Guest guest
HI Sue, It is great to hear that the both of you are doing so well. As for the vitamins. It is recommended that you take a high potency or mega vitamin which is any that has more than 100% of your daily needs, 1000 mg of B 12 twice a week and 1200 to 1500 mg of calcium daily. Iron is recommended for women if they are still menstruating. If you are not taking the calcium you really need to start because you are at risk for developing osteoporosis. These are not a substitute for food it is because of the mal absorption that we now have after surgery. It is not something that you feel at the moment but down the line it will show up. Guest guest
Sue For me my body wasn't absorbing the vitamins well enough, I became anemic and was low on everything. I was eating right and taking the vitamins right, I do all I am suppose too. So Dr. Baggs upped my vitamins twice, I was taking ALOT. Then as my labs started getting better he slowly took me down some. I still take more than most people, but not like I was, and my labs are improving even more. I am a year post op and it took that year for my body to adjust to the life change. I started at 270 and I am 138 and have been holding at this for 6 months now. I am heathier than I have been in so long, even though I still have medical problems that WLS could not fix. I do everything by the book, and exercise faithfully and am one happy lady even if I do have to take some extra vitamins. We are all different and our bodies may need different things, this is a life change and it may vary on each person. Take care. Guest guest
Sue, I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm one of those people that take a handful of vitamins a day. You asked why would someone choose to do that...well about 5 weeks out from my surgery I was suffering from miserable muscle pain and cramps in my calves and was having some severe vision disturbances. At that point I was only taking a good multi-vitamin each day...a friend reccomended I up my vitamins and showed me a website that listed various ailments that can develop form lack of certain vitamins... I was feeling so lousy...so I tried it...within 36 hours the calf problem was gone, no more visual disturbances etc...Since then, I'm not taking any chances and will keep taking my handful of pills every day. One of the biggies is I take calcium 5 x a day, and the why? After bariatric surgery the liklihood of developing osteoporpsis is increased greatly. Normally people who have lost bone mass are not aware until the damage has all ready been done. I used to work in home healthcare and have seen a few severe cases of osteoporosis...I'll keep taking my calcium every day, I kind of see it as insurance. > > I just read a post saying people are taking almost a dozen vitamins a > day!!!!
