Guest guest
Hi All, I was just reading something about E coli and I got to wondering...Does anyone know about instances of food poisoning in post-op DS/WLS patients and if there is any extra risk. I have had food poisoning a few times in my life, but I can only imagine the fear as a post-op of wondering if it is related to the DS. Did anyones doc tell them anything specific about dealing with food poisoning?

Anyway, yeah - E. coli, salmonella, shigella, etc. I would think it might be a bigger problem for RNYers, since the pouch of stomach material they have left can't be producing tons of acid (our stomach acids help protect us against bacteria). But even us DSers probably have a decrease in acid production that might make us slightly more vulnerable and make it more important to make sure our foods have been properly cooked/handled. However, this is just me theorizing; in truth, I've heard nothing about it. - SC
