Crying and discomfort when helmet is removed

My infant grandson, 5 1/2 months, is in day 6 with his Starband. The

last few days it's been on 23 hours. He does OK when it's on, but when

it's removed for bathing, he acts like he's very uncomfortable -

scratching his head, twisting and stiffening his body, and crying when

the bath water touches his head. I've read other posts about this, and

we tried some of the suggestions - wiping his head with a dry towel or

damp washcloth, Aveeno oatmeal bath, hydrocortisone cream (prescribed by

his doc for his eczema). It's getting worse. We've been following

directions for cleaning and drying the helmet.

We can already see some improvement in his head shape, so we know the

treatment is working, but the obvious discomfort is so hard to take. His

skin is pretty sensitive, I think. Any suggestions would be very much

appreciated.

Hmmm...I'm not really sure what else you can try. It sounds like maybe he's just

adjusting to having it off after it's been on all day. I think it's the same

feeling I've sometimes had from wearing a baseball cap all day or a too-tight

ponytail, when I take it off/out, I just scratch my head like crazy to make my

scalp feel better. And babies of course don't understand what they're feeling,

so his main reaction is to cry. It sounds like you've tried everything you can,

hopefully it's just a matter of time until he gets used to the feeling of having

it off as well. I know it must be frustrating though. I hope it gets better!

We take a soft bristle brush and rub Elly's head.  She loves that.  At this point when she's getting itchy she'll grab a brush or something similar and bang on her helmet.  That's our cue to give her a breather and brush her head for a few minutes.  Seems to do the trick most of the time.  She a red head so she has sensitive skin that always seems on the dry side.  I'm sure that adds to her itchies.
