Lilee is in the P/M brace for 22/24, and will go to 18/24 on Vantines Day!

1st off, here is an exact copy on an email Dr. P sent to me...

December 26, 2005

It is hard to know how long Lilee will have to wear the brace. The atypical

clubfeet tend to improve greatly after the first year. In general the brace is

worn 22-23 hours for three months and then 16-18 hours for the next two years,

then 12-14 for another year and then at night until bracing is discontinued

which may be up to age 5.

The red is what I highlighted. WOW! 2 years, maybe because she has A-Typical?

How do I deal with this as she gets older? Will she ever walk, or is she going

to be seriously walk/crawl delayed?

Ok, that part was just thrown in. Here is my possible sleep concern.

She likes to sleep on her side. So she will either twist her back to get her

upper body sideways. This seems like it would make back issues! Or I prop her

up. Well, then shes got that one foot in the air. Think about this...your feet

forced apart like that. Can this cause hip/knee problems? Cause that has to put

alot of pressure on them! I have tried putting blankets/pillows between her

legs, but nothing will stay? Any suggestions?

for whatever it's worth Darbi wore her brace for 15 hours

yesterday. She's nearly 3. I was thinking after I talked to you

that it's not really that long... 16-18 is totally doable with an

older child. I like her to have at least 13, 14 if

possible. Yesterday she went with us to the dentist and we didn't

get home till after noon. She didn't get the brace on till after

9:30pm the night before so I had to bump it a bit during the day and

we just went over a little bit while at the dentist. If she'd got it

on at 8pm, she would have had it on even longer because of the

dentist trip. no biggie. She does fine in the daytime with it on,

apparently lol... I wouldn't worry too much about that, just stick

with it. You can reduce the morning wear a bit by putting it on an

hour earlier in the evening if you like too. Or, do long nights and

add naps. If you're able to get it on for naps that is... I am

not. Naps just happen around here lol. No schedule.

As far as sleeping, Darbi always sleeps on her side or back. When

she goes to bed she lies her feet flat and rolls over to the side to

fall asleep. Yeah twisted a bit but she doesn't seem to mind. When

she was little she slept with me and slept on her side most of the

time. Either with foot in the air or it propped against my

body. Hasn't caused any problems so far that I know of. The

information out of Iowa is that the FAB doesn't cause hip or knee

problems. Now she's just all over the place sleeping any way she likes.

The one thing I have noticed now that she can communicate better is

that she says her shoes are cold. So I wrap the blankets over her

feet as she's lying on her back at night, she says that helps. I

gotta figure out some booties for her methinks... fleece would work,

just gota make a slit in one side and put velcro on it or

something. Should be easy... now to find the time...
