Guest guest
This is very interesting. I never heard of this being done. So, you guys who've had this don't have a belly button? How does that feel? Micky FEEL? Well, it was something I obsessed about for a while-- a body image thing-- there was a whole string of posts about how to replace it-- surgery, tattoos-- got pretty funny-- do a search on tattoos and it should kick up ( I think it was on this list, not the ds_usc list) During the early healing stages, there was a tender spot on the upper edge of the incision which my brain told me was just inside my belly button-- and one of the nurses confirmed that was what was once at that spot. I don't spend a lot of time staring at my belly in the mirror, and if I did, the absence of the navel might be weird, but right now, what is weird is the giant shallow open incision. My plan is to get a tattoo once my weight loss is done and any additional panni is accomplished. I figure they can build a new one ( which is what is usually done) in the last panni removal, but if I can't have the one I was born with and was used to for 49 years, then I'd rather have a nice design-- or maybe just a tattoo of your basic four hole button. How many of these has he done, how many were as bad as yours, does he still leave the open wound? Guest guest
I am pre-DS, but had a panni following a 75 lb. WT loss in March 1999. The panni weighted 17 lbs, and was pinching my femoral nerve. This caused my rt leg to become numb and collapse at odd moments. The area underneath the panni was constantly infected and raw--despite 2 showers daily and holding up the panni with one hand so I could dry underneath it with a blow dryer set to low! I had to hire a lawyer to fight my ins co, but they backed down and paid for it. I still have my original but slightly revised belly button. The surgeon did say he might not be able to save it. In that case my plan was to change my name to Eve. However, I think the button tattoo is a good idea! Pre-op with Dr. Pomp 10/3 and tired of waiting but haven't heard anything from Mt. Sinai since 8/1 when my surgery was postponed. Getting VERY annoyed.

Tom was an exceptional case-- he got an infection of no small porportions that made his recovery a real nightmare! Mine has not been a picknic, but my incision came apart, which isn't the norm, either. Dr. A reserves this treat for those who have high BMI to do two things 1) improve mobility ( a big hangin apron of fat can make walking difficult) and 2) to reduce the BMI and make surgery a little less risky. I think that getting the hanging apron off also makes things less stressful on the vertical DS incision. The giant horizontal incision freaks a lot of people out-- freaked out my home nurse something awful the first week out of the hospital. Once I went back in for the vacum assisted wound closure, and reduced the depth of the incision from 6 inches to two, it was a whole lot easier to cope with. Remember that the abdominal wall is not involved in this surgery, just the external fat and skin, so it is not as difficult a surgery as it might be. Guest guest
Good grief Tom! Couldn't they have used a packing material that wouldn't stick so bad? http://wwwcanada.mmm.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ExecMacro/SH_help_faq.d2w/ report#Q60 Kathleen F Open Duodenal Switch Drs. Mine has not > been a picknic, but my incision came apart, which isn't the norm, > either. Are there any stats on how many ran into the same problems as you and Tom? I think its a great idea and would love to do it (I am stressing my knees in the gym on the bike because my knees hit my belly) but I want it to be sewed up. The giant > horizontal incision freaks a lot of people out-- freaked out my home > nurse something awful the first week out of the hospital Gotta good laugh here. My ma just got out of hospital and had home nurse for physical therapy. The nurse was just out of school, and having a tough time - and just thinking about her seeing your open gaping wound - she would have run from the room !! Remember that the abdominal wall is not involved in > this surgery, just the external fat and skin, so it is not as > difficult a surgery as it might be. So, again, why can't they just sew it up like a regular incision. It just seems to be asking for trouble. > > Nan E.( tired of waiting for her DS DATE) Thans for the info, and hope you get your date soon, GH
