Guest guest
Hi everyone! I've been researching long & hard and feel certain the DS is the type of surgery I prefer. Now I can't find a surgeon in Dallas, Texas that performs it! Why are there so few? Anyone have suggestions? If I can't locate a surgeon in Dallas ( and accepts Aetna HMO ) then I'll have to go ahead with the RYN and I really don't want to go that tiny pouch and dumping. Oh dear. I'll be watching for replies. Thanks a bunch!! Cindy

One reason there are so few is because it takes great skill to preform and it is a more difficult surgery technically. Another reason is that it is more expensive for an insurance company to cover so they approve the cheaper, albeit older RNY. Finally it comes down to lack of knowledge. Even Doctors confuse the NEWER bpd/ds with the tragically flawed BPD procedure from the past. They don't even read up on the current operation or it's benefits. In your case, you can get an RNY because that is what is available in Texas or you can go out of state to a competent ds surgeon who has performed about 100 of them, so they are past the learning curve. Good luck to you. Danine'
