I called today and discussed this and also asked permission to publish the answer on this list. They want to determine " medical necessity. " First she asked if I had been referred by my BC specialist. I said, " You mean my general physician. " Then the light went on (I could hear it!) that the out-of-province doctor IS the specialist. She consulted with her supervisor and said that " as long as the Saskatchewan doctor can bill reciprocally then he has determined that it is medically required. " So, really, you need to qualify under Sask Health criteria to be eligible for surgery. If Sask Health covers you, ipso facto your procedure qualifies as a " medical necessity " . As long as Dr. Calquhoun is reimbursed by Sask Health, BC MSP will pay. No letters to Medical Advisory Board necessary. Now this is me typing out loud: if you clearly qualify according to the general guidelines that are published here and there on the internet, i.e. at least 100 lbs overweight or a BMI greater than 40 then I would go ahead with no worries. If you think you're a " borderline " case, maybe it's in your best interest to cover all your bases.
