Would someone please explain why sulfured coconut is

bad? All of the coconut varieties that they had at my

store contained sodium metabisulfite. I'm confused

because many people have recommended sulfur products

to chelate my son, yet everyone says to stay away from

sulfured coconut. Why?

Basically, certain things can not be processed out of the body

without sulfur and many ASD people have low sulfur. MSM and epsom

salts supply this.

This is a short description of the phenol/chemical processing problem

from the Feingold site, http://www.feingold.org/home.html

" Autism occurs in about 15 of every 10,000 births (although this

figure is increasing), and is four times as common in boys as in

girls. In 1994, Dr. Rosemarie Waring of Birmingham University,

England, found that these children are deficient in a

detoxification enzyme called phenol-sulphotransferase-P (PST). There

were very low levels of this enzyme in every child tested, and some

children also had a low capacity to oxidize (add oxygen to) sulfur

compounds. [adding the oxygen changes it from the toxic sulfite form

to the removable sulfate form. Kd]

The enzyme deficiency means that they would be unable to get rid of

natural toxins in food, and they would also have trouble coping with

many of their own body chemicals which are broken down by this enzyme

system. Besides the usual symptoms of autism (below), these children

frequently also have subtle physical symptoms, such as excessive

thirst, excessive sweating, low blood sugar, diarrhea, bloating,

rhinitis, red face and/or ears, dark circles under the eyes, etc.

Autistic symptoms in the children studied at Birmingham University

appeared to be triggered by ingestion of some foods and chemicals,

including synthetic food additives, which require the same enzyme

during metabolism. Common offenders were wheat, cow's milk, corn,

sugar, and citrus fruits, although each child is very different, and

may be affected by different substances.

For more information about metabolism and this enzyme, and the MHPG

urine test, see the report on the work of Sinaiko, MD, an

immunologist in San Francisco. Dietary intervention was found to

reduce the toxic load. While this is not a cure for autism, it may

help to alleviate some of the symptoms, and help the child to

concentrate and become more aware of his surroundings. For more

information, see AiA-United Kingdom. "

Devin Houston has said that the enzyme in question is not possible to

supplement orally - it is a metabolic enzyme. The sulfur is to assist

in the detox reaction. The Feingold diet targets those foods

containing the offending chemicals so you avoid consuming these hard

to clear items in the first place. Phenols are also processed by this

mechanism. Another suggestion is to add molybdenum which may be

deficient, or magnesium. But sulfur seems to be the big thing most

deficient.

Here is just one link on MSM - http://nutriteam.com/msm.htm

MSM or MethylSulfonylMethane - " MSM softens the cell walls, allowing

allergens, foreign proteins and any free radicals to be moved out of

the system, " Mindell states in his book, The MSM Miracle: Enhance

Your Health with Organic Sulfur. MSM is an odorless, water-soluble,

white crystalline material that supplies a bioavailable form of

dietary sulfur.

There is more info there, but you get the idea. Let me know if you

still have questions.

This subject is confusing-I know there is a difference between sulfites and

sulfates. I " think " that with PST difficiency sulfites are not metabolized

well-just like phenols-but sulfates are the good guys that help the body

detox like with epsom salts. This area is a bit over my head because I have

not studied the whole subject well enough but what I stated above is all I

can remember. F
