Guest guest
Risperadol was prescribed for a while back now and seemed to help reduce 'stimming' behaviors as well as attack modes. Also reduced 's apparent frustration in trying to express whatever is/was bothering him. Helps with the sleep problems to some extent too. If I were you, would ask doctor if appropriate for your child. Although I don't know the long term effects and some fear they're dreadful, (which could very well be an overreaction) for now, it's working for . Three 3 sleep-filled nights in a row!! Heavenly!! Guest guest
My son has taken risperidal for two years now in combination with the diet- the side effects I've notice are a raging hunger when ritilin wears off (before the diet he actually tore a cabinet off the wall demanding peanutbutter) and consequently a marked weight gain, it has helped take the edge off his fustration, it was explained to me that it slows the response down enough that Jay could chose to not punch, kick hit but possibly choose an alternate expression- that was also how it was explained to him at age 8- it seems to work well. I was told by a parent recently that scientist ablsoulutely know that it causes sterility in mice or rats. Thats a rather significant side effect to not mention to a parent I felt, but at the time it was prescribed we were pretty desperate, and even now he holds himself together but its hard work you can see so I wouldn't feel comfortable requesting to change it. A special ed teacher told me there is no need to bee concerned about sterility effects until my son reaches puberty. The other thing I got permission from the doctor to do in the begining (and nonw too)was to spread his dose out evenly through out the day he takes(he weighs 110) 1/2 a 1 mg pill four times -3 with his ritilin and one at bedtime with his zyrtec which also knocks him out!! I have two wonderful years of 10 hours of nightly sleep. I think just getting an adequate amount of sleep helps curb daily tempertantrums as well!!!! -

Risperdal does have some serious and potentially permanent side effects, and I would encourage anyone whose child is taking this or who is considering using this medication, to be sure you understand it and agree to it before using it, and to use the lowest possible dose for the requirements of your child. I would be upset if anyone was advised by a doctor to use this medication without a full explanation of the potential side effects.
