This was the reason they began offering the two part lap. It wasn't really an issue of people's bodies not being able to heal or anything after the full surgery but at a higher bmi the complication rate was dramatically higher. It may seem less 'drastic' or extreme perhaps to have the surgery done in two-part lap, but I think the disadvantages of this (increased risk of infection, etc. because the surgery is performed twice instead of once) would outweight the advantages for those with 'lower' bmis. Perhaps the person who is interested in this possibility could e-mail the surgeons at Mt. Sinai (I would think that Dr. Gagner would be the most open to this option on a person with a lower bmi, IMHO) and see what they think? I mean, the purpose is for the larger person to lose a significant amount of weight before undergoing the second half. I think there is usually a 6 month period in which they do this... Perhaps someone with a lower bmi would require the second part too 'soon' in terms of weight loss goals? I don't know for sure. all the best, lap ds with gallbladder removal January 25, 2001 Dr. Gagner/Mt. Sinai, NYC preop: 307 lbs/bmi 45 now: 219 --- woah! Way to go!!!!!
