You shouldn't need anything different as far as diapers, cremes etc.

You will probably be better off doing sponge baths during the casting

phase. We're all moms here too, not just clubfoot moms so feel free to

ask your general baby questions as well. We usually mark posts not

related to CF with " OT " in the subject line.

The one thing that I found really helpful during the casting phase was

this tape that they gave me at the doctors office. It was a soft

stretchy kind of cushy tape that you could wrap around the top of the

cast and leg to keep diaper leaks from getting in or on the cast. It

was waterproof and really saved me from many a mess. I can't remember

the name of it but it is made by 3M and should be available at medical

supply stores.

Hi . Congratulations on your soon to be born baby. My oldest boy was born

on that due date. I know it can be a little stressful thinking about all that

goes with having a baby and caring for a baby, especially one with a special

need. But don't worry. Having a clubfoot baby is really no different than having

a baby without clubfoot. There's the same amount of caring, love and need. The

clubfoot treatment just becomes a part of the whole process. Since your little

one will probably go into casts shortly after birth, there's really no special

clothing that you will need. Babies can wear anything with the casts. Once they

start the bracing, then clothing with snaps in the legs works the best. Diapers:

anykind...whatever you would use on any baby. Cremes: same thing. Just try to

relax and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy ...and independence! :)

Congrats on your first born. It is a very exciting time, so enjoy it! My

best advice is to take a lot of pictures of the little feet before the casts go

on. That is one thing I regret the most. I only have one or two pics of her

clubfeet before the treatment process. Also, take the camera with you to your

appointments and take pics of the feet between castings. You will definitely

want those later especially when you are comparing his/her progress each week.

Most importantly, enjoy your little one. The newborn stage goes so quickly,

you won't believe it. Cherish each moment. You won't even remember your little

one has clubfeet until you look at the casts.

Hi , it's good to have you on board with us. I can only echo what the

other ladies said - there is very little if anything " special " you'll need

regarding the babe having club foot. I like White Cloud diapers, but only

because they are a good value. Otherwise, pretty much anything you'd typically

use will work except I would suggest not using a cloth diaper until the casting

phase is finished.

On some of the little one piece sleepers I would cut the feet out of them to

make it easier to watch the baby's toes whiel they were in casts. I found it

turned out cute if I'd cut about an inch, maybe just half an inch, below any

elastic band there might be at the ankle, then I'd zig-zag stitch the raw edge

and it would curl up real cute.

Cutting off the feet is entirely up to you but watching the toes of your newly

casted baby is important so either way, check them often against discoloration

or swelling, or slipping back up in to the cast - all of which are bad signs

that need immediate attention.

As far as " Stocking Up " goes, there are a couple items a lot of us here use and

would recommend in a club foot situation.

The first will be what is commonly called a Sleep Sack. This is especially

handy when the baby goes in to his FAB (boots with bar) to help him/her sleep

more comfortably, not tangle in covers and prevent the shoes from banging on the

crib or becoming stuck between the slats. These are available many places,

including Wal-Mart, on the web, and there is also a pattern in our Files section

to sew your own.

The other item is a Sling. Those go by different names too, such as Maya Wrap,

etc. and are very useful in both the casting and FAB period to carry the baby

easily and keep him/her happy with you. Makes grocery shopping, etc., a lot

easier because wearing the FAB the baby won't be able to sit in the cart at

first, but wearing your baby just brings the infant comfort too, at home or away

from home. A held baby is (almost!) always a happy baby, and this makes life

easier.

A lot is just trial and error. Use the clothing you find convienient. I have

2 children with bilateral club foot and I never purchased anything special, just

made do with what I had. And holding the baby, you might have to experiment

some with that as well to find a comfortable way for you both, particularly if

you breast feed - learning to b/f can be challenging anyway but don't let the

casts or FAB discourage you, OK?.

We'd love to hear which doctor you plan to use for treatment as we kind of keep

up with that here for future recommendations. It might be some of us here use

the same one, too, in which case you might be able to meet up for coffee some

time.

Welcome! And congratulations! My 3rd baby is due around March 1st :)

Happy Delivering!
