My son was around 4 months when he was placed in the helmet. He also hated anything on his head. We had about 2 days and he was used to it and looked for it at his times off. He is now out of number 1 and he hates it without his helmet. The kids get used to it pretty quickly. The hardest part was acclimating to the helmet and we had to learn how to dress him so he wasnt to hot in the helmet, that took a good week.

My daughter was diagnosed with moderate to severe plagiocephaly at 2 months old. She also had torticollis. We did physical therapy to correct the torticollis, but she still needs a shaping helmet. She is four months old now. We have decided to go ahead with that, but I am nervous about how she is going to react to the helmet itself. She absolutely hates anything on her head as it is now! When we have to put a hat on her to go outside, she screams! For anyone who has already gone through this, about how long did it take for your child to get used to the helmet?

My son HATED anything on his head too and it took about 1 day to get used to the helmet. The crazy thing is that they are really unaffected by it. For the first day or so, he would cry when we put it on but he doesn't do it anymore. They don't even know they have it on.... It is crazy, how quickly they adapt. I swore that my son would be the one exception and we would have to stop using it, but I was wrong. He actually sleeps through the night with it. Right now he has a cold, and I find that taking it off in the middle of the night helps but other than this small cold he doesn't mind it at all! Missy,From: K

I was really concerned about this also - my son absolutely hated everything on his head, even the hood from a jacket! But, ironically, he doesn't seem to mind his STARband at all. He's been in it about 1 1/2 months, and it took him all of about 3-4 days to adjust. In fact, we had it off him this weekend for his "break" and I was trying on him a hat I bought for this summer (post-band) and he wouldn't have anything to do with it - go figure!

I was skeptical before he started with his STARband just like you, but they really do adjust quickly. I thought it would be awful seeing him go through that adjustment period, but he really surprised me when he adapted very quickly. He is even a little bit older, so he's moving around and the weight of it doesn't bother him a bit.

Good Luck!

My son hated wearing hats and to this day still refuses to wear

them. However, he had no problem wearing his STARband. The first

couple of nights he was in the band he didn’t sleep very well but he

never had any problem with it during the day. It eventually got to a

point where he hated having the band off! We would take it off for the

one hour off and he would be miserable and we usually ended up putting it back

on early. Good luck when you get the band, the anticipation of getting it

is much worse than actually having it.

It is very interesting. My daughter generally hates hats as well, but she loves her helmet. for some reason, this has always just been different for her. She's also one that doesn't like new things, but she did well with adjusting to the helmet. Hopefully it will be the same for you.
