Def. get a referral to PT for your little one. One of my twins had tort and the PT people were able to show us how to do it. We still see her every other week and he's 8 months. I just don't know if a ped. would be adequate enough to show you how to do the exercises effectively and without causing harm. Our PT said do exercises at every diaper change and to stop when they get angry. Some babies tolerate it better than othersGood luck!!Be still and know I am God PsalmsPlagiocephaly From: lilah_hadjinian@...Date: Fri, 8 May 2009 00:48:50 +0000Subject: Left Muscular Torticollis- Exercises

Hello there...

Our daughter is 10 weeks old, I noticed at about 7 weeks that she was turning her head mostly to the right. I called her doctor, went in, and he said that she had torticollis, (he did not say which direction. He showed us 2 exercises that we should do 3-4 times a day, only 5 seconds each way.

Here's the thing...I am concerned about a few things...

After doing research myself, every website said that the exercises needed to be longer and more frequent. So, I have increased them to 10 seconds and 3 reps each way, 4-5 times each day. I have placed all of her toys on the left....put her down each time to look at us toward the left, and I also let her sleep on her tummy with her face to the left.

Doing this, we have seen a marked improvement. But, I do see a difference in her skull...there is a flat spot on the right side of her head and it seems pretty significant to me, although not as much to my husband.

I am concerned we were not referred to a PT...the dcr said that it was minor and that it would be gone in a month or two...does not seem minor to me. And everything I have read says that does not happen.

Also, she screams terribly while I am doing the exercises with her...this breaks my heart!! This is really the main concern....I know that I am not overdoing them and that she has to have them. Is this common? Will she be permanently traumatized? She absolutely hates it and gets so upset!! I am so worried...

Please give any feedback.

The exercises are the side bends (ear toward shoulder) and the chin to shoulder, both sides.

Thank you.....

Lilah

You should see a pt who can teach you better exercises that won't make her cry. Also, go with your gut and get a referral to a specialist for the plagio. Hi Lilah,

I am the mother of a now 7 year old who had undiagnosed tort which led to plagio. We noticed that his head was flat on one side and that his forehead had a bump. Then it was crazy, we started to look at pic's and noticed that his head was always tilted to one side. You should definately find a good PT with lots of experience with Torticollis. I wish that we had done more earlier and I also think that it should be mandatory for doc's to check for tort at the well-baby visits. We lived in Germany for 4 years and there they check every baby at the visits and recommend very early physical therapy for it. Good luck with the excercises and also check out the wingbo swing. It is a tummy time swing that allows babies to strengthen their neck muscles. I found this in Germany and recognized how it would have helped my son. Check out my website www.wingbousa.com. All the best, Sheryl >> > Def. get a referral to PT for your little one. One of my twins had tort and the PT people were able to show us how to do it.
