Guest guest
I was given an epidural prior to surgery for pain control and had general for the surgery. My surgery lasted around 4 hours. I didn't have problems with nausea after surgery, but I did have other problems. I couldn't keep my eyes open for more than 30 seconds at a time for about 3 days. I couldn't watch TV or read for about a 5-6 days. I had really strange dreams for about 2 weeks. The longer you are under the general anesthesia, the longer the affects can last. For me, I would rather deal with the side effects than be awake for the surgery. I had spinals and was awake for 2 c-sections and they were both pretty awful. There wasn't any problem with pain, it was just being aware of what was going on and not liking it. I had bad nausea problems with one of my c-sections, so the epidural/spinal doesn't always avoid that. You can also get severe headaches from epidurals/spinals that can last for months. That isn't very common, but it can happen. Kathy M. DS 7/19/01 - Dr. Hares pre-op 213 9/1
