Guest guest
Wow - I'm not sure what to say. Did Maysa hold still during the scan? Did feel that both scans were good ones? I guess I'm surprised that there was so little growth since you've been reporting that they've been shaving more off. With , we've only have one time that anything was shaved off and she's grown 1.13 cm since the start. I think some of that is that the STARband and DOC band are made slightly differently in that there's more room initially in the STARband. Do you think they've shaved off too much? Did they shave anything off of the sides? I noticed that she did get 2 mm wider and 2.4 mm longer so I'm wondering about the sides or maybe it was just that the second helmet was made with more room for growth and that's why. I'm sure that you are probably quite dissapointed given that you've already been through wearing a helmet with no change and the door of opportunity for fixing this is no longer so wide open. I can totally relate to the dissapointment in the head slowing down, but I was able to see some improvements in the symmetry numbers for . Even though Maysa's diaganol difference is higher, her symmetry numbers for her volume are actually better than 's. The cranial vault numbers only deal with the level 3. Maysa's upper facial symmetry is also totally awsome. You've posted recently that you feel as though you see improvements and that her head looks good. I've been feeling this way lately as I look at with her helmet off. Like you, I want to get the most correction possible, so we are staying in her STARband until the 6-month period is over and she will graduate on May 11th. We were supposed to go in next Monday, but I called and changed the appointment. We have 4.5 weeks left. I'm hoping for 92 percent (from 92.4 percent) in the 8 weeks since her last scan. I think some people think I'm crazy for staying in for 8 more weeks just for this little improvement, but I have to take the chance for my own piece of mind. I need to know that I did everything that I could. I am finally making some peace with her head and ready to accept it as it is. I don't think that her head is so noticable anymore and her hair will definately cover what little flatness is there. So, if we don't see improvement, then I will be okay with it. In the recent pictures of Maysa, she looks similar to in the front in that you have to look for the brachy. Anyone who doesn't know about what to look for probably wouldn't see it. So, yes, 93 percent is not ideal, but it's way down from where you started. If Maysa has no more improvement in her last few weeks, would you be okay with her head shape? , mom to , 19.5 months 20.5 weeks in STARband plus CST land Maysa - two more reports Hi all, I took Maysa to Orthomerica yesterday (instead of today) and I have new reports and entries that I posted on Maysa's blog at http://mymaysa.wordpress.com/ if you care to check them out. Guest guest
Wow - I'm not sure what to say. Did Maysa hold still during the scan? Did feel that both scans were good ones? And I am not sure what to think anymore. Maysa was crying during the scan but held her head still and I held her arms. We were done in 3 seconds or so. She only scanned her once and I have to say that she was more positive about it all than I am at the moment. That’s the part that I still don’t understand. The band felt loose when she first got it and would then feel tighter. It would feel loose again after an adjustment (and she’s had one every two weeks since Feb 2nd) and then it would feel tighter again. I know that there is room in her band because the inside of it is more curved than her head is. So I know that she has room to grow in it. Do you think they've shaved off too much? Did they shave anything off of the sides? I noticed that she did get 2 mm wider and 2.4 mm longer so I'm wondering about the sides or maybe it was just that the second helmet was made with more room for growth and that's why. I don’t think that they’ve shaved off too much and nothing was ever shaved off of the sides, just the middle part, kind of like a vertical rectangle right in the middle back of the band. As for the cranial width numbers, I really don’t see them as a problem. If you go back to the two reports that I posted, back in October, her measurement was 151.1, then in January it was 150.8 (so down by 0.3) and now in April up to 152.7, so really only wider by 1.6mm in 6 months (from October to April) which is better than what I can say about how much she grew while in her first passive helmet which was 12.3mm. Can you believe it? 12.3mm. what a shame! I'm sure that you are probably quite disappointed given that you've already been through wearing a helmet with no change and the door of opportunity for fixing this is no longer so wide open. I was really hoping for her brachy numbers to be at 90% or at least close to that. It also bugs me that her plagio is back up a little, although I’ll tell you the truth, no matter how I look at her, I can’t see it. What I see the most is how although her head is now rounder in the back, it is still “missing†a rounder piece to it. It won’t show if her hair is down, but once I put it in a pony tail, as cute as she looks, I can see it. I can totally relate to the disappointment in the head slowing down, but I was able to see some improvements in the symmetry numbers for . Even though Maysa's diagonal difference is higher, her symmetry numbers for her volume are actually better than 's. The cranial vault numbers only deal with the level 3. Maysa's upper facial symmetry is also totally awesome. I never paid much attention to the other numbers but you are right. Her upper facial symmetry is really good. I just wish I could say the same about the back… Also, no one should look at the numbers for the ear asymmetry. has had to cover her ears for the scan and therefore the numbers there have been off in both the January and the April reports. You've posted recently that you feel as though you see improvements and that her head looks good. I've been feeling this way lately as I look at with her helmet off. Like you, I want to get the most correction possible, so we are staying in her STARband until the 6-month period is over and she will graduate on May 11th. I think some people think I'm crazy for staying in for 8 more weeks just for this little improvement, but I have to take the chance for my own piece of mind. I need to know that I did everything that I could. Well then crazy moms we are. Maysa has 5.5 weeks left in the band and will probably graduate a week or so after . Her head does look better and I told Amber so this morning, but she grew another 9mm in circumference in the past three months, almost as much as between October and January so I was expecting different results… I hope that after “Tim†reviews her latest DSi that at least they decide to shave off some off of the back right side again to allow her to grow in that area and bring her plagio down a little more. I am finally making some peace with her head and ready to accept it as it is. I don't think that her head is so noticeable anymore and her hair will definitely cover what little flatness is there. I will have to accept it as well when May comes around. In the meantime, I am in a mindset to fight this plagio/brachy till the end. I had friends over this weekend and they couldn’t see what was wrong with her head. Instead, all they could focus on were her eyes and her smile. It made me feel so much better… If Maysa has no more improvement in her last few weeks, would you be okay with her head shape? I have been OK with the way she looks for a few weeks now. Her hair covers it all very very well, but I know that soon she will want or have to wear her hair in pony tails. As you know, it gets hot up here in the summer and wearing so much hair down is not an option. I never want her to feel self conscious about the way she is wearing her hair. Her older sister has no head issue whatsoever and cannot stand for her hair not to look right. She is only 3. So in short, I am happy now but I am still worried about what it will be a year or two from now. , mom to , 19.5 months 20.5 weeks in STARband plus CST land Leila,Maysa, 14.5 months, 5.5 weeks left in DOC band 2http://mymaysa.wordpress.com/ From: melanie.watson@... <melanie.watson@...>Subject: Re: Maysa - two more reportsPlagiocephaly Date: Wednesday, April 8, 2009, 5:37 PM Wow - I'm not sure what to say. Guest guest
I wonder if they've fine tuned the scanner in recent years because I've read recently that the error rate is 1 mm. I'm assuming that means with overall growth, but I'm not sure if that would translate to all of the numbers for the different measurements. It's kind of hard to imagine that 1 mm in circumferance error could translate to 1 mm in width error etc. I'd never really thought it through much, but I think I'm going to ask about that soon. Guest guest
Hey Leila, I had a few questions about Maysa's most recent scans. You mentioned her head is getting wider? I am considering a helmet/band for my little one and don't want that to happen to my child! Also, with the doc band have you had any measurements reflecting growth of Maysa's head out of the top of the band? I've heard this has happened to many kids while being in treatment. Let me know, I'd really appreciate your help! Guest guest
If I could jump in here, I'm not sure it's accurate to say that many kids have had their heads grow out the top of the band. I would say that happens very rarely (I've only heard of maybe 3 in the year+ I've been on this board) and is definitely not a good thing. It typically happens in the hands of an inexperienced ortho. > >  > > If Maysa has no more improvement in her last few weeks, would you be okay with her head shape? > >  > > , mom to , 19.5 months > > 20.5 weeks in STARband plus CST > > land > > > > > > > > > >   > > > > Maysa - two more reports > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi all, > >  > > I took Maysa to Orthomerica yesterday (instead of today) and I have new reports and entries that I posted on Maysa's blog at http://mymaysa. wordpress. com/ if you care to check them out. > >  > > Leila > > Maysa, 14.5 months, 5.5 weeks left in DOC band 2 > > >
Guest guest
, Maysa's head really didn't get wider while in the DOC band. 1.6mm according to the Starscanner in 6 months is really nothing. Plus, like said, there is a 0.5mm margin error that has to be taken into account. Maysa's head grew wider while she was in a previous passive band for 3.5 months from the time she was 5.5 to 9 months of age. Also, I don't have any reason to believe that Maysa's head grew out of the band from the top. We all know that after a while babies head (and especially their face) don't stay round. Instead, they grow longer. That's what is already happening to Maysa. She went from having a round baby face to having a more elongated one. She will be 15 months next week. I have one piece of advice for you. Choose your band and your orthotist very very carefully. I would say that happens very rarely (I've only heard of maybe 3 in the year+ I've been on this board) and is definitely not a good thing. It typically happens in the hands of an inexperienced ortho. Guest guest
, Maysa just cries whenever someone gets close to her head and sometimes tries to fight them with her hands and arms but she usually stays pretty still. Something funny happened to me today. After I gave Maysa her bath, I redecorated and washed her band and then I let it sit. Well, I forgot to put it back on after the 1 hour. I had put a clip to hold her hair back so it doesn't fall on her eyes, and she looked so darn cute and "normal", I totally forgot to put it back on. It's not until her dad got back home (an hour and a half after I took off the band) that I realized I forgot to do it. This never happened before! In the past, I would hurry to put it back on because I was so aware of her misshapen head. Not anymore, really. Guest guest
Isn't it wonderful to finally feel that way? Now, it would be nice if the numbers told us that our kids were "normal." I'm anxious to hear about the DSI results. Since I'm not familiar with the CT methods, will the DSI provide you with measurements? What will it tell you? , mom to , 19.5 months 20.5 weeks in STARband plus CST land Maysa - two more reports Hi all, I took Maysa to Orthomerica yesterday (instead of today) and I have new reports and entries that I posted on Maysa's blog at http://mymaysa. wordpress. com/ if you care to check them out. Guest guest
Leila- Have you heard back from CT/Tim Littlefield (he's a biomedical engineer - who created the DSi - and a VP there) about Maysa's mid-DSi?
