Hi Kirsten,

I posted this once before, but someone totally disagreed with me even though my orthotist suggested it. It works miracles...

I use the 91% alcohol and pour it on there and use a scrub brush. I then lather a washcloth with Safeguard Antibacterial Soap and scrub with that. I rinse it out with warm water. I then pour more alcohol on there and wipe it with a dry cloth. I also put it outside to dry if the sun is out.

His helmet is always sparkling white and NEVER smells. He has been wearing it for 7 weeks now and the helmet is still in perfect shape.

Good Luck!

I have been scrubbing my sons band down with 70% alcohol (as instructed) and it still gets that stinky smell. Any good advice on how to make it go away (would powder help). My son does not sweat bad at all in it, but he does have a lot of hair. Thanks so much!!!

Try 91% and drying in the sun - that seems to help.

We used a bit of J & J freshness time release - just a sprinkle that would rub around. I thought it helped and our ortho didn;t mind.

I also tried the mint smelling alcohol - but it turned the foam greenish - which I didn't like.

It was probably me that disagreed with you ;-) I'm one of the mods.

Whenever someone posts a message like this I feel compelled to reply

that many orthos and band providers recommend only alcohol, and

recommend not getting the band wet at all. I don't want someone to try

your suggestion, have a problem, then say the plagio group suggested

it... I have heard of people succeeding with methods like yours.

However I want people to know they should check first and that if the

baby has sensitive skin it might cause problems. The concern with

using anything but alcohol is that some residue might be left in the

band and irritate the head. Same with water, since you don't want a

damp band on the head for 23 hours.

I did not have much success with the 70 percent alochol. The 99 percent brand was so powerful. I had to use gloves to put it on, but it worked so well that after a few days, it didn't stink after she wore it for her 23 hours. It ended up being too much for my hands so we switched to the 91 percent and that works pretty well.

We were told that we could use a mild soap with water every couple of weeks if we wanted. I only did that once because it took too long to dry and after I found the stronger alcohol, we didn't need it.
