Guest guest
Just curious...does/has anyone stopped banding their child before the band is outgrown or optimal measurements are achieved? , mom to Luke, 5.1 months, severe brachy, mild left plagio 1 week 5 days in STARband New York
Guest guest
I was ready to quit at 4 mo. My daughter had severe brachy and was below 90% (I think she was 88 or 87). However our specialist and ortho both encouraged me to continue to get more correction. The last month we gave her a few extra breaks (when we went to a party or dinner with friends) but otherwise kept it on. I was glad we did because we got an additional 2% correction on the brachy and she graduated at about 85%. By the end of 5 mo she had outgrown her band. Her head is still not perfect, and I would be kicking myself if I hadn't gotten as much correction as possible. -christine sydney, 3 yrs, starband grad > > Just curious...does/has anyone stopped banding their child before the band is outgrown or optimal measurements are achieved? > > > , mom to Luke, 5.1 months, severe brachy, mild left plagio > 1 week 5 days in STARband > New York >
Guest guest
We are still going...for now, but I am seriously considering stopping (any second) due to skin infections and irritations. My son's head has improved some, enough that it is less noticeable to most, but still flat in back. He went from 8mm to 4mm and 97% to 93%. The orthotist and doctor pretty much think we have about another 3-4 weeks in this helmet and that we should get some additional correction but don't recommend a second helmet because he looks pretty good and has had so many problems with skin irritations. (And they know we'd probably never agree to a second one!) My son started his band 1/30/09 at almost 7 months old and wore it (uncomfortably the first week, then comfortably after adjustment for two weeks) until he got a staph infection and was out of it two weeks. Then back in it without complaint for one week, then out of it for one week with a second staph infection. Then back in for five weeks, and now he's been out of it for a half a week with an irritation. It is clearing up and hasn't needed antibiotics, but it is still somewhat red. The neurosurgeon said yesterday to wait until all the redness goes away, and then have it adjusted again and try one more time. I'm PROBABLY going to do that, but I'm sort of inclined to just call it a day and say enough already. I'll see how long it takes to fully improve..... > > > > > > Just curious...does/has anyone stopped banding their child before the band is outgrown or optimal measurements are achieved? > > > > > > , mom to Luke, 5.1 months, severe brachy, mild left plagio > > 1 week 5 days in STARband > > New York > > >

Guest guest
Antonia, I've been meaning to post and inquire about your son's progress in his DOC band. I know that he's been wearing it for a while now and it is hard for me to believe that there has been no correction. I know that at one point you said that his head was growing out of the band from the top (please correct me if I am wrong). What did the ortho say? Have they shaved anything off of his band at all since the start? Guest guest
They said it was nothing to worry about. His head has grown of course some mms, but his brachy was at 95 percent and now its 94.6 percent. I know I started late, but honestly, with all the money, angel flights time and effort, mostly I feel that this was a huge waste of money and time. We have our graduation in two weeks and even the pics I take with his hair slicked down against a white wall, the side pics look the same and the view from the top still brings me to tears. I just feel like we weren't lucky like others have been. He's just doomed with that shape. I won't be doing a second doc. He got pretty much zero correction, not enough to make a difference. Also, it bugs me how CT says the measurements are just for insurance, yes that's great, but visually, there is no change to mine or my families eyes, but our ortho swears she sees drastic change and volume. His head is still wide and flat as ever. I see others results, I just wish we had been as lucky, and also wish CT would admit defeat instead of seeing change that hasn't happened. Its discouraging. Guest guest
My son had two and has had some very stubborn red irritated spots that didn't get infected. Our orthotist and neurosurgeon said it is very uncommon, and my orthotist is amazed (not happily) that this keeps happening! By the way, they were garden-variety staph, not MRSI (the antibiotic resistant kind). > > Is a staph infection a common problem associated with banding?! > >
