,

I took a look at the pictures and I have to say that it looks like it's shifting quite a bit. I can understand that the fit might be hard because of severe flatness, but I don't understand why the ortho can't help with this by adjusting the band in some way. We have been quite happy with our STARband, but my understanding is that there is more variability of the quality of the orthotist with this band than with the DOCband.

Did they create the band based upon a scan? If so, what is hard to get the scan? Did Luke not hold still? 's scan for her band took several tries and it still wasn't perfect, yet her fit was better than the picture that I saw. They did have the ear cutouts that were a little off and so our ortho had to cut quite a bit behind one of her ears to avoid the kind of thing that I see in your picture, but she had no problem doing this. Even after that, when I told her at our next visit that I was constantly shifting the helmet to the right, she added that tiny piece of padding that I spoke about and that did the trick for us. Her fit has been great since.

I have to say that, even at it's worst, 's fit was significantly better than this. Have you spoken with anyone or gotten any kind of infomation regarding the skill of this ortho? If your information says that he knows what he's doing, then give it a little time. If you don't have any information, there's a database on this site that you can check out. Or you can post to ask if anyone has any experience with him. In the meantime, try pleading your case again. I can't imagine how he could possibly be comfortable with this fit.

It was explained to us that the helmet is trying to fit on a head that is flat and so that makes it likely to shift or move in some way at first while it is loose. You definately should see a difference with some growth. If you don't, I would move on if you can afford to do so.

STARband questions

Luke has been in his STARband since last Thursday. I had posted about fit issues before and his ortho has helped with it a little bit but it keeps rotating to the left (he has severe brachy and mild plagio). My questions are: The right side of the band shifts and keeps scrunching up his ear and all the skin around his right eye when he is awake and looks to the right. Is that normal? I am worried that it will cause some deformity around his brow line and eye socket. I know that the band will fit better when he grows...however, will it be have caused some other issues by then? I'm guessing it will take about a month for the rotation to get better?? ( in 3 more weeks for him).I brought this up to his ortho yesterday and he said I have to be diligent and keep positioning the band in place when it shifts. But I am doing that ALL the time. I can't imagine that is good.I'm sorry to sound so desperate. I see the improvement in his brachy, but I'd rather have a flatter head instead of causing some other facial issues. My husband and I are considering getting a DOC band, but I think we should wait at least a month before doing that to see if anything changes with our STARband.I am going to post a pic of the band and how it shifts under L babies: LukeThank you!

Hi , Luke was an absolute terror during his scan. We only got one good

scan in about 1.5 hours of trying and that was with me holding his chin with my

thumb and index finger. It was horrible. But it looked like it was a good scan

to me (to my layman's eye).

My husband put a piece of moleskin on the top part of the band on the anterior

side. It seems to be not shifting as much. I had asked my ortho to do what

your ortho did and he said that when he has done that in the past, there is an

indentation that occurs. Have you noticed if that happened with ? I

tried to tell him I don't want it to be a permanent thing on the band...I just

want something that will help stop the constant shifting for a couple of weeks

until his growth holds the band on it's own.

He finally relented and cut away part of the back of Luke's helmet (there is a

lip that was about 2 inches long that kept Luke from doing any kind of tummy

time) and he cut away some more of the right ear cutout. Is there any harm in

doing that? My husband was afraid that if too much was cut away then there

wouldn't be anything to hold what needed to be held in place.

As for my research, there was nothing that said this ortho had any problems.

Not that I feel he is Bad...he has helped in every other way and been very

patient. But with this concern, I really have been pushing for some resolution

and he has been pushing back.

I am calling my insurance company to find another ortho for a second opinion.

And I am calling OrthoAmerica again to talk to one of their ortho's on staff.

Thank you for all your help.

The pictures you posted of Luke remind me of those posted by Holly of her son . I am sorry to say that it doesn't look good at all. She has a post about how the starband fit on her son at http://shootingallens.blogspot.com/2008/12/i-dont-know-what-to-do.html (I hope you don't mind me linking to it Holly).

My daughter was in a helmet for 3.5 months and the results we got from it were not what we expected at all. According to reports we got from Orthomerica and Cranial Technologies, her plagio and brachy got worse while in this passive helmet from ECA. We ended up putting her in 2 DOC bands after that...

In my opinion, you shouldn't have to readjust his band that often and it shouldn't rotate that much on his head either. I am not a specialist but I feel concerned for your son.

i'm all for it.

elizabeth, this is exactly like what happened with alex. his band just didn't

fit well on his funny little head. we ultimately decided to ditch our starband

and instead are driving 500 miles round trip to the cranial tech office in

charlotte to get the docband. i have zero regrets about this decision. alex's

head is looking amazing.

i agree with leila that luke's band doesn't look to be fitting well. i would

definitely get a second opinion. best of luck!

elizabeth,i was just looking at your pictures again and i know your heart must be breaking. have you sent these to your current orthotist? you should. there is no way they can tell you the fit is normal. i'd also consider calling CT and emailing them your photos. i'm not sure where you are in new york, but there's a CT office in new jersey. there's also one in connecticut. hang in there and trust your mommy instinct!!

Hi Holly & Leila,

Thank you so much for your concern. I have literally gone from being a polite

person to a crazed, pushy mother in a matter of days. I have been to the ortho

almost every other day and he keeps telling me that my complaint is the same

from all parents. He cut away a little from the ear and the lip in the back and

that helped a little. However, it is still rotating to the point that it is

folding Luke's ear in half. When I told him that I think it is too big and

shifting too much, he told me to keep repositioning it. When I told him it's

the worst at night during sleeping, he told me to set my alarm and wake up and

fix my son's band. That's when I almost lost it.

My husband and I are getting as second opinion tomorrow from another ortho at

the place we received the STARband. If we aren't happy with that outcome, my

insurance said it would pay for another ortho to check it out at another place

that comes highly recommended from OrthoAmerica. IF those two meetings don't

appease me, we are going to CT in NJ.

I'm hoping this will be resolved tomorrow. I keep thinking that if the helmet

has been too big, then it hasn't been helping Luke's brachy all that much

because the back of his head has been resting on the helmet....or is that how it

works? (he still sleeps on his back, face up)

THANK YOU!

Your ortho's responses in your first paragraph are driving me insane! So you went from repositioning your baby to repositioning the band? That's crazy.

If I were you I would get that second opinion you are talking about but would still go to that other Orthomerica facility as well as CT (for a free evaluation). It never hurts to get more than one opinion. I just hate for what happened to Maysa to happen to your son. Maysa was in a passive helmet for 3.5 months. She grew considerably during that time, yet her brachy and plagio got worse according to reports from CT and Orthomerica. Now I know that she will always have brachy. She is 15 months old and about to be done...

Your son is still young and you can get great results but only if he is in a good band and if the orthotist is reputable and experienced.

Please keep us posted and stay firm.

Just an update: My husband and I took Luke to get a second opinion about his

ill-fitting STARband from another orthotist at the place he got his band. It

fits SO much better. I can't tell you how relieved I am. It took everything in

me to not go crazy on the first orthotist that day, but I didn't want to that

person since my concerns were being addressed to my satisfaction.

Thank you all for your words of wisdom and concern! I was seriously thinking of

stopping, but you kept me going! I am still considering switching to the DOC

band, but I am going to wait for Luke's one month evaluation.

I am going to make sure that I get to see the other ortho as well as my first

ortho at each of my following appointments. Thanks for reminding me!

They made Luke's STARband fit better by putting a little foam at the bottom left

of the neck extensor and flared the sideburn part in. Apparently, the ortho

flared them out too much at Luke's first adjustment. The other ortho told me

that the sideburn part is the main part of the band that prevents it from

rotating too much.

Having his band fit makes such a world of difference!

i'm so glad to hear this, elizabeth! way to go standing up for your son. you must feel such relief! i hope the rest of his time in the band is smooth sailing and the end result is a nice, round head!!hollymum to 10-month-old twins: alex (in docband since 1/05/09) and max (no band required)

,

does NOT have an indentation in the area. I was worried about this as her head began growing and so I asked. I was told that because it was so high up on the band, there wouldn't be. In any case, it fell out as her head got bigger. I'm not sure if this is normal or not. At one point, I was going to call and ask about it because I was concerned it would affect the fit of the helmet. It turns out that the helmet was feeling too tight before and now feels perfect.

So, maybe he's just not aware of how to put the padding in so this won't happen.

Hi , No worries about not getting back to me before! I totally

understand!

The ortho put a small bit of foam on the lower left side of the neck extensor

and tightened up the sideburn part. It is soooooo much better. I'm guessing he

errs on the safe side because he isn't as experienced or aware. I just don't

know for sure.

Thanks for the advice...I probably would have left it alone because I was

unaware:)

shifting quite a bit. I can understand that the fit might be hard because of

severe flatness, but I don't understand why the ortho can't help with this by

adjusting the band in some way. We have been quite happy with our STARband, but

my understanding is that there is more variability of the quality of the

orthotist with this band than with the DOCband.

scan? Did Luke not hold still? 's scan for her band took several tries

and it still wasn't perfect, yet her fit was better than the picture that I saw.

They did have the ear cutouts that were a little off and so our ortho had to cut

quite a bit behind one of her ears to avoid the kind of thing that I see in your

picture, but she had no problem doing this. Even after that, when I told her at

our next visit that I was constantly shifting the helmet to the right, she added

that tiny piece of padding that I spoke about and that did the trick for us. Her

fit has been great since.

better than this. Have you spoken with anyone or gotten any kind of

infomation regarding the skill of this ortho? If your information says that he

knows what he's doing, then give it a little time. If you don't have any

information, there's a database on this site that you can check out. Or you

can post to ask if anyone has any experience with him. In the meantime, try

pleading your case again. I can't imagine how he could possibly be comfortable

with this fit.

flat and so that makes it likely to shift or move in some way at first while it

is loose. You definately should see a difference with some growth. If you don't,

I would move on if you can afford to do so.
