Questions About Eye Asymmetry and DOC band

My son Hudson has moderate plagio and severe tort since birth. We noticed it

immediately ~ my husband in the birthing room. His jaw was noticeably crooked,

his ears were very asymmetrical, and his head was definitely not round. At his

1 month check up they referred us to a specialist who told us to just keep

stretching him etc. Long story short he received a star band at the beginning

of Feb. ~ he was just over 5 months. At our check up last week it was

determined that he had outgrown his helmet, and didn't " qualify " for another.

The problem is that his eyes are now more noticeably asymetrical. They told us

they could refer us to a plastic surgeon for this!?!? My question is, does this

become more pronounced as everything else straightens out? Are the eyes the

last thing to align? Has anyone had experience with this and found the DOC band

to be more effective for this problem. Overall, his head shape is better, but I

still think it has a ways to go. I would be willing to spend the $ out of

pocket if I knew that the eyes were going to be fixed for sure. Any advice

would be appreciated. Also, does anyone know where you would go for a DOC band

in MN. We went to Mayo Clinic and they only do the Star band.

Where in MN are you located? I'm from Eau WI, which is about an hour away from the MN border. The closest DOC band facility would be in Madison WI, I don't believe MN has a CT facility. We unfortunately did not know about CT in Madison prior to getting our son a Star Band from a local ortho here in EC. If we would have known more I would have driven the 3 hours one way in order to go to CT.*** Amy Fiore ***

I would be also interested in hearing from others on this issue. My son has been in the helmet for ~6 weeks and his head has been rounding out pretty good. But I do focus on his face asymmetry so much that at times it seems that it had got worse. It might be that it is just an illusion, but I am really anxious that it really happening. Has anybody experienced "getting worse before getting better"?

Thanks

I'm not sure I would say it gets worse before it gets better. I do believe part

of it is an illusion, because I remember thinking the same thing with my son.

His asymmetry definitely seemed worse when he had his band on, and I'm not sure

if it's because the band itself makes it more noticeable (because it's giving

you certain lines and angles around his face to base your comparison on), or if

maybe it does squish their faces in certain ways that makes it look worse, but

doesn't REALLY make it worse, if you know what I mean. My son was older when we

started treatment so his facial asymmetry didn't improve a ton, but it did

improve enough to notice. And it's gotten a little better since then (but maybe

that's an illusion too now that he DOESN'T have the band on anymore). Once

they're older and more animated with their facial expressions and stuff, you

don't notice it as much. At least I don't.

Does anyone watch American Idol? Anoop Desai has one eye that's squintier than

the other. Anyone notice? Oddly enough, my husband did first, and he usually

rolls his eyes whenever I nitpick someone's features.
