Hi, everyone: I know this much IS true: at least 50,000 people worked in

the towers. No one knows is everyone was at work when the first plane

slammed into the first trade tower at about a quarter to 9. There are many

others who where there to conduct business, etc. Not to mention those on the

ground and were injured/killed by falling debris (this includes commuters

from new Jersey, Brooklyn, Queens and other places -- WTC is a major subway

transportation hub). Also, I heard from Mayor Gulliani news conference that

many fire fighters and police officers lives were lost in their response to

the disaster. There were two triage centers set up right at the base of the

towers and when the towers collapsed, these places were in the direct line of

debris.

There's a huge 4-5 inch layer of soot covering all of lower Manhattan and it

has been/is being evacuated. Lower Manhattan totally closed. Many people

were able to escape into nearby buildings when the soot and debris collapsed.

The Mt. Sinai surgeon's office was closed (probably due to emergency

response) and I just heard that Mt. Sinai was receiving patients. WTC is

STILL on fire and another building (no. 8, I think) is in danger of collapse

at this time. It isn't over yet....

My acquaintance Lump who works in 1WTC has sent an e-mail to say that he

was in a meeting mid-town and is fine! Thank God! Others I have heard about

who had friends/relatives working in the WTC are fine. Subways are just

starting to revive. is coming home via subway and I hope he makes it

home safe and sound. A relative who works in the Pentagon was evacuated

safely. Whew. Both planes that went into WTC were commercial airlines and I

think they estimate about 160 people (on both flights - whether or not this

includes DC I'm not sure) on those planes.

Another plane flew into the Pentagon. One flight crashed outside of

Pittsburgh and some speculate that it was heading for Camp although

this hasn't been confirmed.

All flights across the US have been grounded until tomorrow noon at least.

The ashes and smoke came here to southern Brooklyn and we've stayed inside

because it was difficult to breath even though the sun was out and it was a

clear day.

's brother is a NYC Police officer and we haven't heard from him or his

wife. We don't know if he was on duty or not or whether he was one of the

first to respond to the disaster. My prayers are with those who were

affected. I'll feel so much better when we hear from 's brother but

since he is actively involved in the rescue efforts I don't know when we will

get any word.

all the best,
