Guest guest
Welcome, & ! I recognize your username from the clubfoot board. I just had a nice long response typed up, and lost it due to a Yahoo glitch when I sent it. Argh! I'm really sorry to hear about 's struggles and then your bad luck with the broken leg. I am sure you were so discouraged! Do you mind sharing what region you live in so that we could recommend some doctors for second opinions? Have you ever considered taking to Iowa City to see Dr. Ponseti? You are absolutely right in not " giving up " because can still be corrected in a conservative fashion, you just need to get him into the hands of an experienced doctor who is commited to non- invasive techniques and has had success in treating older children. For the ultimate in inspiration, consider our friends here on the board, Joyce & . Joyce's family adopted from China, where she had rec'd no prior treatment for her clubfoot. Dr. Ponseti's team in Iowa City has been working with them to correct 's clubfoot with minimal surgical intervention, even though she's over 3 years old! They are an inspiration to us all! Try not to be too worried- we're here to help you. We can get you all kinds of information so that you can research your options and work to get the best care possible for your son, and have peace of mind that you're making the best decisions on his behalf. Guest guest
, As far as California goes, well, I cannot recommend Dr. Colburn in Pleasanton/Walnut Creek enough. I know this isn't the LA area, but it would be worth your effort to see him as he is the doctor with the most experience in using the Ponseti method in California. Plus, we have known lots of families who have gone to him over the years, and we know that they all like him and report that he's following the method correctly. There are doctors closer to you who are on Dr. Ponseti's list, but you have to be very cautious because many of them are modifying the protocol from what we've heard from our other CA families. Since is older, I would recommend starting off with a very experienced doctor and then trying to find a local one for the follow ups once he's fully corrected and " on track " . There are some doctors at the Shriners in Sacramento who are using the method, but I don't have any feedback for you as far as whether or not they've had much experience in working with older children. Yes, Dr. Ponseti still sees patients on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. He will be 92 in June I think, but he's still pretty spry! His colleagues also see patients, Dr. Morcuende, Dr. Weinstein, or Dr. Dietz. People travel from all over the world (!) to have Dr. P treat their child. We have members here who have traveled from S. Africa, Finland, Italy (right, Matteo?!), Greece, the UK etc. to Iowa City. If you go there and stay for the duration of treatment, they do the cast changes every 5 days and you can stay at the Mc House if there is a vacancy, otherwise the RMD House can give you a voucher for a local hotel room. Lots of families have traveled there from afar and can give you more insight if you decide to go. Just ask if you have questions and are seriously considering it! Here's the link to Dr. Ponseti's website (you'll have to cut and paste it since it's so long) where you can see the qualified physicians list and more information: http://www.uihealthcare.com/topics/medicaldepartments/orthopaedics/cl ubfeet/index.html Here's a website with more information for you to do research if you'd like: http://members.tripod.com/ponseti_links-ivil I hope this helps! & (3-16-00, left clubfoot) http://ponseticlubfoot.freeservers.com/ > > Thanks for the response > > I live in Southern California; Los Angeles/Orange County areas.
