Guest guest
We have our first appointment with a pediatric neurosurgeon on Tuesday. I have no idea what to expect. I imagine they will measure my baby's head? Will they do a fitting for the helmet there, or would that be a seperate appointment? My baby is 8.5 months old, so I am extremely anxious to get her started on helmet treatment asap. (as I know you can all understand!) What should I expect from this first appointment? Guest guest
That's a good question, it's hard to say because all specialists are different. When we saw a ped neuro, we talked to an intern first who showed us the results of my son's CT scan (which isn't required or anything, just what we were there for), then the neuro came in for about 2 minutes, barely ran his hand over my son's head (he stayed in his carseat carrier the whole time), and said to save my money and spend it on a nice vacation instead of a helmet. That was at 4 months old. At 16 months old, we finally saw a ped plastic surgeon that took my concerns seriously and wrote the script. They did take measurements at that appointment. Some will, some won't, some will take the time to explain everything to you, some won't. I would recommend that you go in with a list of specific questions that you want answered and don't leave without getting those answers. It's easier to remember if you write them down, I always leave appointments and then think of something else I should have asked. Good luck! Guest guest
If the neurosurgeon recommends a helmet, he/she will refer you to someone else for the helmet. There are lots of options and people on this board have many recommendations about the best orthotists to go to in a particular area. The orthotist will measure for the helmet, and it will take approx. 2 weeks (or less) to get the helmet from the time your baby is measured for it....so you'll be able to ask lots of questions, but don't expect to leave the neurosurgeon with a helmet being ordered. There are a few steps in between. Good luck!! > > We have our first appointment with a pediatric neurosurgeon on Tuesday. I have no idea what to expect. I imagine they will measure my baby's head?
