Guest guest
Tabitha, I can empathize with your concern! Owen, who is my youngest of 4 and the only boy was not talking at 18 months either. In fact, he was always such a quiet baby. I did have his hearing checked and it was fine. All of my girls were talking in complete sentences by age two so I was quite concerned. One thing that I noticed was that because he was the only boy, the girls seemed to lavish much more attention on him and as such, they did much of his talking for him. I wasn't concerned that he didn't understand but just with his refusal to 'use words' - he preferred to nod or shake his head or point and grunt. I finally had to speak with the girls and told them that although I knew that they were only trying to help, that they were really hurting him by 'talking' for him all of the time. I then had to demand that he 'use words' whenever he wanted something. Within a few months, he was on his way and now at almost 3, he doesn't shut up! Once that little 'light bulb' in his head went on and he realized how much easier life was for him when he could communicate his needs on his own, he never looked back. He certainly is a little chatterbox now!! Hope this helps, Daiga and Owen, 02/04/03 Unilateral LCF, FAB 14/7 > > Everyone here talking about speech delays has got me a little concerned. Karter almost 18 months says hardly anything, but knows what things are. If you tell him to put that in the garbage he will take it over and put it there. While looking on the net was not any help to me. (Just got me more worried) My question is does anyone know the age they will test for speech delays? Or does anyone know who to contact in Iowa that could help us with that. I've never really been worried even when my daughter was talking in sen. by now. Everyone says the 2nd child is slower and he's a boy. So, I never really thought about it. On the net there is an article about ear infection and speech delays. Karter has had ear infections most of his life. ENT Dr. even said his one ear drum is retracted, but is going to recheck it 2 months, to see if the tubes helped. This is in the ear that has ruptured twice. > > Thank you for your help > Tabitha > Brittanie 2-9-00 > Karter 7-30-04 > > > --------------------------------- > Yahoo!
