Guest guest
Hi Marcy, For the first couple of days your supposed to take them off and check his feet and then put the shoes back on. Its good practice anyway. I always gave Christian the whole hour at one time but whatever works for you guys. We see Dr. Herzenberg and have the Markel shoes too! I hope things continue to go well with Ethan. No blister success with Markells? My son Ethan sees Dr. Herzenberg and Dr. Lamm as well and he just got into his shoes on Friday. Dr. H is out of the country, so Dr. Lamm and their physical therapist fitted him with the shoes. Does anyone have any success with the Markell shoes with no blisters? I'm scared to death that Ethan will get blisters and we'll have a screaming 3 month old on our hands. Are there any tricks to ensuring that no blisters form? He kicks a lot and I can just see his little feet getting beaten up in there. Also, this may seem like a dumb question, but I know that we're only supposed to take off the shoes for an hour a day. Do people only take them off once per day and leave them on the entire rest of the day? Does anyone take them off any other part of the day to check the feet or arrange the sock? All of your advice is so helpful. I don't know how I would survive without having this forum to read everyday. Marcy --------------------------------- Yahoo! It is the Tips & Tricks document put together by Kori. Some people do check the feet every now and then. As long as you are only doing it a couple times and it is a quick out and in, it probably wont hurt anything. After a couple days you will feel more confident and not feel the need to do it anymore. ALOT of people have had success with the Markells without a single blister. Often times, blisters are due to user errror - not getting the heel seated all the way into the shoe or not having the buckle tight enough. Good luck and let us know how it goes! Guest guest
My Olivia has been successfully wearing the Markells for 3+ years without one single blister. She started at 5 months old and wore them until she was 1.5 years old. She was released due to loose ligaments, so didn't wear them for the next year. She relapsed and was casted at 2.5 years old and has been in them ever since recorrection. She turned 4 in October and will be in them until at least 5 due to the relapse. Again, she's never had a blister or pressure sore. We always did the full hour at one time. The first few days we didn't take them off at all except to readjust. They gave us a tips document in Iowa that said to mark a line on the shoe where the toes should be when seated properly. I just kept an eye on that mark. If her toes were moving back then I repositioned the shoes and checked for problems. I probably had to do that 2-3 times in the first two days, but then I got more comfortable putting them on her and the swelling from the casts went down. Once that happened her feet stayed in them fine. Good luck to you!! Jen & Livie No blister success with Markells? Guest guest
Marcy, My son Logan had terrible blisters/soars, HOWEVER that was because we were given shoes that were too small, a bar that was too short, and I had trouble getting his feet in properly. It does seem that if the foot is well corrected and you have the right fit you should be all set. Good Luck. And should your son get a blister, there is an ointment called SSD that you can get from the ped that heals them quickly. No blister success with Markells? Guest guest
Our son has been in them for a little under a year, and we did the evening 1 hour out for bath and bed too. It works like a charm to establish routine, just like Jenni mentioned. He may kick at me from time to time, but I figure he'd do that even if he didn't have the shoes! It just hurts more when he connects, that's all. My son Ethan sees Dr. Herzenberg and Dr. Lamm as well and he just got into his shoes on Friday. Guest guest
We use the Markells and have for almost a year. One thing our doctor taught me is that if the shoes are slipping that's when blisters occur. He taught me to tighten them as tight as possible without cutting off the circulation. At first that's tricky, but after awhile you just know how tight to make them. You want the buckle tight and also the laces tight, just tight enough so his feet don't slide around when he moves, but not so tight that his feet are cold when you take the shoes off. It also helps to have a hole cut in the heel so you can make sure his heel is all the way down in the shoes when you tighten the buckle. He also told me to check 's feet daily when I take the shoes off and to use moleskin to put on any red spots. We've only had to use moleskin a couple of times and we've had no problems with blisters. and 11/10/03 bilateral cf dbb 14/
