Guest guest
Hi all my new friends, In reading one of the digests today. Boy are you all prolific. Joy shared what was wrong with her surgery and what they were going to do to revise it. I am a small eater most of the time so this interested me. My biggest downfall is coke and I know I am going to have to deal with this. But I have been very afraid that my metabolism is so slow that even with surgery I won't lose weight. I am one of those who religiously followed Weight Watchers and the first week most people my size lost 4-6 lbs. Then they steadily lost 1-2 lbs a week. I lost 1/2 lb and then maybe every four weeks or so I would lose another pound. It was pretty discouraging. Now I even have medications to deal with. So if I feel this is a real issue my doctor and I can work on this before hand? How would I approach it? Also, if DS is not being done in my state, is there a website if the doctor is interested to really learn more about that he could go to? Thanks i Frances Geddes
Guest guest
i, I don't think I could be much help to you cuz I am pre-op too and have not even met with the surgeon yet, but you are describing me also. I have many concerns about whether anything will really work for me because I really am not a big eater and I have to diet just to maintain and cut down to about 600 calories to see any kind of weight loss and it is even slow at that little amount. I really don't know why this is the way it is. When I was in high school, over thirty years ago, the first diet I ever went on was more or less a starvation diet. I had no breakfast and ate an orange for lunch and a small piece of meat and salad for dinner. I did that for three months and lost thirty pounds. The next real diet I went on was with a so called diet doctor who gave me oh so many pills. I was young and dumb and thought he knew what he was doing. I dont even know what all I was taking but when I would leave his office I had several different kinds of pills to take. He was eventually run out of town. I think maybe I just messed my whole system up by doing that. I have really not been able to lose weight since then, so I also have many fears about this not working. But that is one reason that I want this type of operation so badly. I know that I need the malabsobtion. I think with the malabsobtion and small meals this almost has to work. Maybe not as fast as some people, but it will work. Sometimes, after learning about the DS, I wonder if maybe some of us really do have an (I don't know how to word this right) overproductive duodenal or something that needs this surgery to correct it, just like some people that have overactive thyroid or produce too much or not enough insulin. Every little thing that we eat, or even as it seems, maybe we really do get fat just by smelling food. Your gallbladder will sometimes dumb bile just by you smelling food so why not the duodenal too. I have always felt that there has to be something wrong with me. I have had so many of my friends in my lifetime that have told me all they have to do is cut down, or watch what they eat, or cut out soft drinks or bread and they lose weight, but all of those things combined would never work for me. Anyway, I think that when we meet with our surgeons, they will discuss our dieting history with us and how hard it is for us to lose weight and will hopefully decide to give us a shorter common channel. This is what I am hoping anyway, cuz I only want to have to do this once. Well, now that I have let everyone know what a complete idiot I am, I guess I'll go to bed.
