However, I woke up in the OR and my ventilator, etc. was out. I only had some oxygen through the nose thingy and my IV. I tend to come to pretty quickly (I knew this from past outpatient back surgeries). I never went to the ICU -- just waited quite awhile for a bed in recovery. This could be because of my starting bmi (45) and my lack of serious co-morbidities (I had joint/lower back pain and a mild hiatial hernia only found at the pre-op endoscopy). I don't think everyone goes to the ICU after surgery as a rule. Many MO people might after surgery but this may be due to their inability to breathe immediately after surgery (hence the need to be kept on the respirator awhile longer), etc. I don't know about Dr. Macura's statistics, etc. but every doctor has faced complications (yes, even death). It is definately something to ask one's surgeon. All the best, lap ds with gallbladder removal January 25, 2001 Dr. Gagner/Mt.
