From: Stanley I. Greenspan, M.D.

For some time, I have been a regular guest on NBC's Today Show.

Recently, I have been assisting the producers of that show in the

development of a three-part series on children with special needs

that will air Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, August 29, 30 and 31.

The series will focus on the early identification of developmental

challenges (including autistic spectrum disorders), the elements of a

comprehensive intervention program, and the improved outcome that can

occur when the elements of such a program are put in place. It will

emphasize the importance of facilitating nurturing relationships

between children and their caregivers, no matter how severe the

developmental challenges, and that all children, including those with

severe forms of autism, are capable of improving their intimacy and

pleasure in relating to others. It will also stress the importance

of working with all the different components of a child's

development, including language, motor, sensory and emotional

capacities. Most importantly, it will point out how critical it is

to tailor a program to a child's unique developmental profile rather

than trying to fit the child to the program.

As part of an individualized program, the role of parents and family

Members will be viewed as critical and an intensive home component

will be seen to be the vital glue that enables the entire program to

work. Parents will be encouraged to be co-leaders with therapists

and educators in mobilizing a comprehensive, intensive,

relationship-based, individualized approach for their children with

special needs.

To implement these principles (which are described in some detail in

our new Interdisciplinary Council on Developmental and Learning

Disorders 'Clinical Practice Guidelines) will require significant

improvements to services for children with special needs in most

parts of the country. Even the best educational systems and most

enlightened communities fall far short of providing sufficiently

intensive, relationship-based, individualized approaches that work

with the child's underlying individual differences and developmental

capacities. Consequently the vast majority of children with special

needs are not reaching their potential.

I hope you can tune in to the NBC Today Show series. I'll be

appearing On the first segment on Wednesday, August 29 to outline

these issues Followed by interviews with families meeting these

challenges on Thursday and Friday.

I hope you will consider sharing information about this series and

the principles it will emphasize with those in your community who are

concerned with enabling each and every child to have the benefit of a

developmental, individual-difference, relationship-based approach

tailored to the child's profile and sufficiently intensive to promote

optimal growth.
