Yes, this is true about the BPD... Also, the removal of the antreum/plyorus

(lower stomach) has been indicated to increase risk for pancreatic cancer (as

found in peptic ulcer patients who have had the antreum removed to alleviate

their condition). I would definately ask the surgeon WHO she prefers the

BPD, given that the DS is a marked improvement in many ways on that older

surgery... I could see if you had particular health reasons to necessitate

the BPD but to make a blanket statement that the surgeon does NOT perform the

DS even though it is considered an improvement (maybe because it is more

difficult to perform?) would make me extremely uncomfortable.

I'm guessing it's Ren since she's really gung ho on the lapband. However, I

don't know why she would abandon the DS procedure entirely... unless she is

trying to use this as a way to 'push' the lapband more?????? this is

the same question I asked myself! lOL

Yes, the lapband is the least invasive surgery (a real plus) but it doesn't

have comparable weight loss stats (especially long term weight loss) with the

DS. I think it is about the same as an RNY, give or take..... I would

discuss this surgery with post-ops (and you won't find any long termers

there) and see how they feel afterwards. If I had a choice between an RNY

and lapband, I think I *may* lean towards the lapband but if I had the choice

between anything and the DS, it would be DS hands down! :)

The stomach stapling alone will not keep the weight off. In my opinion this

doctor has been around the ether for too long.

Perhaps a consultation with another surgeon would be helpful.

Quite a few of Dr. Elariny's patients have had only the BPD. They

are calling it the " sleeve, " because the resulting stomach resembles

a tube or sleeve. The sleeve is the stomach part of the full BPD/DS.

Those who have had the sleeve are losing weight. The real test will

come in several years: will they manage to keep the weight off

without benefit of the malabsorbing intestinal tract? That is an

unknown at present.

Run; don't walk! Find another surgeon. She should not be pushing

you into one or another surgery. Rather, she should be explaining

ALL the choices to you and letting YOU choose which one is best for

you.
