Guest guest
Amber, Pope, MS is 5 hours and 17 minutes from St. Louis. Dr. Dobbs, practices at Shriners there and all your son's care will be free till he's 18 at Shriners. I say, do not pass go, do not collect $200... call Shriners in St. Louis tomorrow morning, talk to e his nurse and get him corrected by one of the best there is. his contact info is on the U of Iowa website. OK - you'll have to post Dr. Dobbs info again for Amber cuz I'm lame and can't find it. Who to talk to, etc. I know you posted it recently but I can't find it quickly. I search for Dobbs in my email and I get all your posts because of the signature! lol... not your fault, but will you post it again please? Just go to Dr. Dobbs Amber. Do that and life gets simple now and will be just fine... go see him at Shriners. 5 hours, that's really doable for this kind of opportunity for . Guest guest
Amber, It is very clear from your decription of the casting that they are doing things incorrectly. Properly applied casts do not fall off. I would have to do some checking around for recommendations in your area, but have you looked into going to a Shriner's hospital? I know I cannot recommend the one in Shreveport, but there is one in Tampa, how far is that from you? All medical care for children under the age of 18 is free at shriners hospitals, they can sometimes help with transportation depending on which Shriners you choose to go to. There are also special airlines that fly people for free for medical care. And of course most Shriners also have a Mc house nearby or some other sort of inexpensive housing for families to stay in. Also, I know the Shriners in St. Louis is far, but Dr. Dobbs, one of the best Ponseti doctors in the country practices there. Also, have you seen the list of Ponseti qualified doctors? http://www.uihealthcare.com/topics/medicaldepartments/orthopaedics/clu bfeet/physicians.html Hope this helps some, keep asking questions well help you figure out where to go to get little 's feet all fixed up in no time! Guest guest
Many parents who travel for care just go to the city they are going to and stay for the duration of the initial casting phase. This is usually about 5-6 weeks. Some people do fly or drive back and forth too. It just depends on whichever works out best for you. No matter how you handle it you won't be sorry that you went to the extra " trouble " of traveling. It is so worth it! > > > > > > My Name is Amber my son is 11 weeks old and has bilateral > > > clubfeet. He has been in cast for the last 6 weeks now. 's > > > casts are changed out every 2 weeks. Guest guest
Amber, Dr. Grogan in Tampa is good, but if you are having to travel from MS, I would DEFINATELY say go to Dobbs in St. Louis as opposed to going to Tampa. Both doctors are at a Shriners, but go straight to Dr. Dobbs if you have a week or so. Good luck! Guest guest
Hi Amber, It's good you are starting to look around for other options. At this point your son still has an excellent chance for total correction despite these past weeks of inferior treatments. I believe others mentioned it but I want to echo what they say - travel to St. Louis, Missouri to see Dr. Dobbs. It's a pain in the butt, we know that - but the alternative is your son getting bad treatment and living a life on sore feet with possible surgical interventions over the years. You really only have one chance to do this right before your son is old enough that his window of opportunity is shut on him. Meaning, as he ages, the chances of gaining full correction will decrease dramatically. And, as he goes further in to inferior treatment, he may well end up with worse feet than he started with, such as happened to my oldest son several years ago. We suggest Dr. Dobbs first because he is an excellent Ponseti Method doctor with years of training, practice and lots of parents who can recommend him first hand. Secondly, working at the Shrine hospital lets you forget insurance considerations - it'll be paid for through the Shrine organization. Angel Flights, Wings of Hope and other groups will transport you and your child there for free. Shrine will see that you are transported to your appointments. The Youth Bridge House or one of the Mc Houses will lodge you there for minimal amount of money. RMD houses in St. Louis are $5.00 per night with no limit to how long you stay. The Youth Bridge house costs considerably more per night but there is the chance that Shrine would pay your bill there as well. If you need to travel back and forth between St. Louis and your home, the Wings of Hope, etc., can accomodate you there almost every time. If you have other children, they can likely go with you if necessary. All this adds up to an excellent opportunity for you to get your son in to one of the USA's most respected Ponseti Method doctors for practically no money, allowing you to go where he can be treated with expert hands and thus enjoy a life time of excellent feet to live on. By calling the Shrine/Dr. Dobbs/etc. they can get you started going there. If this is your plan, I think you asked if you should continue the casting at home - my advice is NO. Take the stupid things off. Likely the bad casts are doing more harm than good by staying on. The little bit of ground you child might lose is nothing compared to the abuse to his feet the casts could cause which will be harder to fix in St. Louis. Best of luck to you! shawnee have got some questions My Name is Amber my son is 11 weeks old and has bilateral clubfeet. He has been in cast for the last 6 weeks now. 's casts are changed out every 2 weeks. We are having soem problems though. For one with this last set of casts he was able to wiggle out of his right cast. From the start i have not like the way they did things but with the insurance that we have its the only option that i have right now. The second problem that has now come along is that the crease in the bad of his foot above the heal of the foot has been rubbed raw and has been bleeding. i know before i let them if think about doing surgery on my baby boy later on down the road other than the nipping of the tendon. that he will go some where else and get a second option. I have learn alot by reading and lurking for alittle while. I didnt find out till nathan was born that he had clubfeet. Where i take him its a club foot clinic the doctors dont do any of the casting the interns do. We have only seen the Dr Warrener when he was first evaluted. i dont like the way they do things at all. When u go up there u better not have to be anywhere in the next 2 to 4 hours because that is how long we are normally up there. We live in Pope, MS and travel up to Memphis,TN to LCH (Labonor Children Hospital). I was wondering if there was anyone else around this area that goes up there or just anyone close by? You all have help alot with all i have read on here and also answered alot of questions that i had from the beginning. Guest guest
Amber, I'll be going to St. Louis on March 12 for my foster son appointment on March 13. Prayers do work we was schudule to go on Feb. 20 but cancel because couldn't find a way we live about 8 hours away. So I thought I could go Louisana trip paid in full, the Shriners would drive me there, just me and my baby. So I called last Thursday they told me it could be several months to get a appointment down there. So I called St. Louis talked to Family Services told them my problem, she told me she would make some calls for me. She called me later told me I got another appointment on March 13 at 8:30 A.M. She also called the Wings of Hope pilots, they are going to take me there on the 12th pick me up on the 14th. She called me Tuesday of this week to tell me everything is set to go. She also ask the Temple about helping us, so they are paying my stay at the Haven House which is usually 25 dollars a night. So I don't have to pay for anything there. That's so WONDERFUL. God answer prayers. Oh the Shriners will pick me up from the airport there take me to the Haven House, this way I can take one other person with me.
