Re: Beverages!

Babs,

I think you will get lots of different answers on this one. Dr. A's

nutritionist counsels us to drink caloric beverages, at least at first. I am

5 months postop now, and drink an occasional caloric beverage (glass of milk

every day, regular soda maybe once every other week, a slurpee/icee every

other week or so), but most of my beverages are non-caloric. The first three

months after surgery I drank a lot of fruit juice (orange and grapefruit) as

it was one of the few liquids I could tolerate. After a few months, I was

able to handle thinner liquids well, and was eating more, so needed less of

the juices.

I don't miss it. I don't want it. I am just as happy with diet soda (with

most of the bubbles stirred out) than with regular. I am just as happy with

Splenda in my coffee or iced tea as I am with sugar, so for me it is a no

brainer.

You will find the right balance for you. I don't really deny myself anything

I want. So if I really wanted a caloric drink, I would have it. But I

wouldn't have it every day, or several times per day.

I am always cognizant of the fact that the " window of opportunity " lasts for

a limited time. I want to do all I can to optimize it. However, I do

balance that with some reality. Even naturally thin people have a treat on

occasion. They don't deny themselves constantly. Maybe what we are learning

is the balance they somehow found all along!

I'm rambling! Anyway, balance is the key word here. Yes, have a caloric

drink sometimes. But drink lots of noncaloric drinks too.

Let me start by saying that I hated drinking water pre-op. I drank a lot of

plain iced tea and diet Pepsi. I also like some Gatorade. I tried iced tea

after surgery, but it was too strong tasting. I have had some soda, but

after a few sips I am done with that. I find that water is what I crave most

and if I water down the iced tea, that is good too. I am not denying myself

anything so if it sounds good I try it. So far the only thing I regret

trying is corn. Trust me, your taste will change after surgery. I would

have never believed that the biggest chocolate addict in the world would

rather drink water than eat chocolate ice cream.

I am 5 months postop, and sweets are just now beginning to taste okay to me.

Until this point, anything sweet (including my beloved Diet Snapple) tasted

horrid, excessively sweet - yuck! I still don't crave sweets or want a lot

of them, but I can tolerate the sweet sensation without being overly

sensitive to it.

I have to say, I sort of enjoyed that period of time when sweets tasted so

awful to me!

Pre-op I drank a minimum of a 6 pack of diet coke a day and forced

myself to drink some water. Post-op I really only want water &

sometimes a little glass of nonfat milk. Most things are too

intensely sweet for me now. I crave water all day long. I can never

get enough of it. I'm drinking more than 64 oz a day. There is no

way I could even force myself to drink a regular soda, way too sweet

and then it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
