Guest guest
Hi everyone! I'm leaving in the morning for my first pre-op visit to Dr. Welker in Eugene, OR. *** Yippeeeeee *** Anyway, it takes 7 hours to drive there so I was going to get my thoughts together and write my questions for hime in the car (husband's driving). But I just read where Heidi had a list of questions on her site (mywls.com). Great idea. I'll starte with her questions....but I can't seem to find the list of questions...found the site, tho'. Anyone have access to a good list? I'm so excited. I saw my new PCP today (old one retired). She's nice but seems luke warm to the procedure but agrees that I should do something. She started asking me stuff like...why do you eat?...when do you eat?....do you eat for emotional reasons?... I said I really don't have any deep seated " reason " for when, what, and why I eat. I like to eat and started out at 9.5 lbs and have been steadily gaining my whole like. Ugh... She agreed there wasn't anything " abnormal " about me. (I know she was just trying to be of help. If she just had access to *the magic pill*, but NO. It'll probably be invented the year after we all have our surgeries!) The malnutrition and other complications are what worries her. When I asked her questions, she said it's time for me to put myself in the surgeons hands... trust him to know what's best for me. She's a family doctor therefore not qualified to discuss specific " surgery " questions. I weigh -----ready for this????------ 352 !!! Her scale only went to 350. Her nurse and I guessed the other 2 pounds. I'm just sick. The last 54 pounds happenend in the last 5 years. (I think 20# have been in the last 2 years!) What's happened to me. Sorry this is so long. I'm just rambling. I had hoped it would be more like 340. Kind of a bad day. My husband's (who loves me dearly) said, " Oh, my God! " You know, there's just something about putting a number on it. I gotta go. If you have questions, please e-mail tonight!! My address is shirley@... ~~~ShirleyAnn
Guest guest
Your weight is only 3.5% over what you thought it was. That seems like a very modest difference. Now I must admit that if my significant other made such a comment on my weight (not that I'd share that info pre op) I'd been very pissed off. My body, my business. I know, I'm radical. The scale in Dr W's office is not out there where anyone can just look over your shoulder. You might consider having all the preliminary stuff that the medical helper does (no she isn't a nurse) without your husband there. Then he can come in and meet with you and Dr Welker when you are ready to do that. Your 352 is not all that bad, Shirley. Seen lots of folks start higher than that.. and they seem to lose sooo fast. Just my $.02 in Seattle > Hi everyone! Guest guest
Shirley Ann, You will really like Dr Welker. He will know exactly what to tell you too. I had my consult with him but a different Dr did my DS. Good luck with your appointment. I am sure you will find him very caring. Regarding your weight. Do not be hard on yourself. 2 years ago I lost 80 lbs and then June 2000 I was injured and gained it all back. I had my DS in April 2001 and have now lost 62 lbs and have about 60 to go. So what I am saying is this surgery does the job. Drive safely, Angels hover ever near, DS 4/11/01 Bowel obstruction 4/21/01 Dr Deveney @ OHSU Starting wt 282, BMI 47 Current wt 222, BMI 37 QUICK!! Guest guest
Congrats, Shirley! Please don't worry about the " extra " 14 pounds (340 to 354). Just think, you'll probably lose that in the hospital after your surgery! I don't know about questions except I'd probably ask: (If you don't know already): How many DS surgeries has the doc done? For how long? Success rate? Is there a support group by meeting or email? Also: How long will the common channel be? Any hidden costs that you might have to pay upfront? Ack, my mind is blank, that's all I could think of. Good luck! dee --- Shirley Groom wrote: > Hi everyone!
