Guest guest
Hi Carol, I completely understand where you're coming from, I felt the EXACT same way when we decided to go see Dr. Ponseti. I was actually on the phone with our local doctor the day before we went and said " I don't want you to think that I'm not expecting you to treat Sierra anymore, we just want to see what Dr. Ponseti has to say... " To make a long story short, when we told Dr. Ponseti that our local doctor was interested in his opinion and asked what we should tell him, he said " Tell him to come back and take the classes again " . His response to my daughters' treatment was basically disbelieve that the 2 local certified doctors hadn't told us to go see him months before we did, and that we were the ones that sought him out. I will not trust our local Ponseti certified doctor again, and kick myself time and time again for not thinking about going to see Dr. Ponseti earlier. With atypical clubfoot cases especially, you should go see Dr. Ponseti (once we asked for the referral, our local doctor told us that many of the nation/worldwide atypical cases are going to see Ponseti, why he never informed me of this earlier, I don't know…). We really liked our doctor too, a very nice person, who definitely seemed very versed in the Ponseti method. You shouldn't feel ashamed/guilty of getting a second opinion at all, and in fact, you should ask for a referral to continue to see Dr. Ponseti. As far as showing your local doctor Ponseti's casts – I say go for it – it is after all an art, not a science, and hopefully all people involved can benefit from it. I took pictures of the first few casts that Dr. Ponseti did for our daughter to show her local doctor, and sometime in the near future will take her in to show him her new, corrected feet. Hope this helps, Jescie and Sierra (Atypical BCF 06-13-05) > > Okay, I have committed doctor infidelity. LOL I went to see Dr. > Ponseti without telling my local orthopedist here. Guest guest
That makes me feel better. Dr. P diagnosed with MA, as well, and recasted her. I don't think my local ortho would have fine-tuned her feet quite like Dr. P was able to, but our local doc is a good doctor and really does want to help club feet babies and not just feed his ego like some docs I hear about. I don't want to hurt his feelings since he has been helpful, careful, kind and gentle with us and . After hearing about 's treatment with him, Dr. P said that we have a good doctor to return to. I hope he can look at this as a learning opportunity. Re: Going back to our local doctor Don't worry Carol. I'm sure your ortho will understand. I did somewhat the same thing, but without the actual visit to Dr. P. I told my ortho all along that I was communicating with Dr. P via phone/email. When this whole " c " shaped thing came along and I heard from Dr. P that my little guy may need 1-2 more casts, I called the ortho. It was so hard to tell him in a way which wouldn't be interpreted as an offense. I simply told him that from the last set of pics that I sent to Dr. P, he suggested 1-2 more casts would be necessary. Then I told my ortho that I would like him to take a look to see what he thinks. I really respect our ortho doctor and trust his opinion also. > > Okay, I have committed doctor infidelity. Guest guest
That is so true about just doing what is best for your child. Thank you for sharing your experience. Going back to our local doctor Okay, I have committed doctor infidelity. LOL I went to see Dr. Ponseti without telling my local orthopedist here. I know I am not the only one who has done this and I am nervous about how to approach this issue with him. I like him a lot but went to Dr. Ponseti because only he could answer some questions I had about 's feet, which are atypical in some ways. I would like to think that my doc here would like to see a Ponseti cast. He has been trained by Dr. Ponseti so is following the Ponseti method for the most part. Any suggestions or experiences to share? I will post later about my visit with Dr. Ponseti. It was a wonderful experience! Guest guest
Well, we have a different story to tell about this. Our doc did a good job, ultimately, of casting 's foot, but had ideas of using the KAFO and AFOs. I started second guessing our decision to use him and got Dr P's opinion. He said our doc did a good job on the foot, but scoffed at the use of the K/AFOs. I didn't feel that I should have to fight for the right treatment, eg the DBB, and didn't go back to the first doc. In fact, I was a wimp and never even called to tell them we wouldn't be back!! lol was supposed to have his cast removed on Jan 5th and we never went. To this day, I have not heard from his office!! Guess that shows we made the right decision to leave the first doc and stick with Dr Ponseti, huh?! We will be making the 3 hour drive to Dr Ponseti for follow ups from now on. Guest guest
Carol, Quite simply, you tell your doctor that you had the awesome opportunity to take to go see Dr. Ponseti, and you jumped at the chance because as a mother, you felt that you had to for peace of mind. The doctor shouldn't be offended at all. If the doctor is offended, then it's time to get another doctor. Doctors want the best for their kids (if they have any) also; so they should understand why a parent wouldn't turn down the opportunity to see Dr. P. After all, I'm pretty confident that he probably has the most personal clubfoot experience of any doctor in the world...plus the experience of his partners at the U of I added to that....you really can't find another location in the world with more expertise and focus on the clubfoot condition. Don't feel like you did anything wrong. Get it in your mind that you are excited to share this news with your doctor about the opportunity given to ..... It worked for me when I went back to my old doctor, I hope it helps you too. & (3-16-00, lcf)
Guest guest
We didn't say anything to our old doctor (who fortunately we didn't let do surgery and who never got around to the Botox). We just called his surgical coordinator and told her we were cancelling surgery and never called them again. We're luckier than some, though, since we found Dr. Tuck who really knows his stuff (look at the diplomas/certificates from Iowa on his wall!), is as nice as can be, and is only 1/2 hr. away so he'll be our doc through broken bones and anything else orthopedic our kids or we need over the years. And hey, he must be smart since he kept pushing me to get into this group. - Seth (Meir, lcf 1/29/04) > Carol, > Quite simply, you tell your doctor that you had the awesome > opportunity to take to go see Dr. Ponseti, and you jumped at > the chance because as a mother, you felt that you had to for peace > of mind. Guest guest
Thank you for this advice. I think your English is delightful. Much better than my Italian! Carol Re: Going back to our local doctor Dear Carol, I am italian grandfather of Giuseppe. Giuseppe's history is in PHOTOS of group. I have same experience with my local doctor who use Ponseti's method. But the feet of Giuseppe have atipycal clubfoot. I talked directly with my italian doctor and said my wish to meet Dott. Ponseti. He appreciated my sincerity and understanded my idea. He liked to know the cure of Doct. Ponseti. I transmited to my local doctor the exceptional experience with Doct. Ponseti and he appreciated. The frankness is the better solution. Excuse my english. Matteo Procacci Carol ha scritto: Okay, I have committed doctor infidelity. Guest guest
, I know you will never regret going to see Dr. Ponseti. All the best to you, Carol Re: Going back to our local doctor Oh! This thread couldn't have come along at a better time! We've been struggling for a while now with taking our son to Dr. Ponseti. The Dr. we're with here at home has been wonderful and caring with our son and he made a lot of progress initially. So we've struggled with telling her that we wanted to see Dr. P. We finally set our minds to it (thanks to everyone on this board who encouraged us!) and we're seeing Dr. Ponseti on Monday. Flying there on Sat. Anyway, that's a story for another excited post! I had to call our Dr. today to get some Xrays to take with us and She and her assistant are great. So professional. I'm telling you, I made myself sick over talking to the Dr. about consulting someone else. I'm a worrier too. I think DH wanted ear plugs every time I brought up this subject. Like other posts have said, It's all about what's best for your child though. We have to make the hard decisions sometimes! Thanks for this thread. I really needed to read them. > > Okay, I have committed doctor infidelity. LOL I went to see Dr. > Ponseti without telling my local orthopedist here.
