I was hoping it might go away after the surgery, but I had also heard that this surgery sometimes makes it worse. Did your reflux go away right after the surgery, or was it a large weight loss that got rid of it? Sheryl

I recently had my EGD and showed no problem even tho I've had reflux for over 10 years and am a former heavy smoker. Now my throat is a bit scratchy in the am since I've put on more weight and started snoring with my mouth open. That'll do it. I really don't want to get on antacids if I don't have to. Antacids will not hurt you. I suggest that you try " Pepcid Complete, " which is an over-the-counter med. It contains a mild antacid PLUS another drug which decreases the output of stomach acid. If the regular dose doesn't work, try a double dose (which is probably still less than the dose in the prescription strength Pepcid). If it workd, you're home free. If it helps, but not enough, ask your doc for a prescription for Prilosec or Prevacid. These also inhibit acid production. I have been taking Prilosec for years with no side effects other than causing me to make a lut of tipergrahical errurs. --Steve --

Guest guest
I had both GERD and a hiatal hernia (which can be diagnosed with an Upper GI series ordered by your PCP or surgeon)and was taking massive doses of Prilosec and Tums! When I was switched, my surgeon also repaired the hernia. Haven't had to take Prilosec since! Marcia > Re: GERD and sore throat > > > what you're experiencing is acid reflux. Guest guest
what you're experiencing is acid reflux. Just before my surgery I was like you, sleeping sitting up, not eating after 6pm. I'd still wake up choking on bile and that horrible burning in my throat and ears. Often I couldn't get my breathe and it really scared me. I already was on Prilosec. So, the best I could do was what I was doing. Once I had the surgery it went away. So, just know that this will soon be over for you! Guest guest
Since I had to sit up for a while to sleep after surgery I didn't have anymore problems with it. By the time I was able to sleep flat in bed it was gone. That was at about 4 weeks. I continued on the Prilosec through all that until I weened off about 3 months after surgery. I just started not taking it once in a while to see what would happen. When nothing did I kept not taking it until I was completely off. Now, once in a while I'll get mild heartburn if I heat something spicy but if it bothers me I can chew an Alka Mint. No problem!! Guest guest
Oh, quite your bragging!!! LOL! I'm sure soon even spicy foods won't bother me. They do less and less.
