Report on Consultation with Dr.

Schweitzer

I am in land and had my initial consult with Dr.

Schweitzer today, who is located at Sinai Hospital in

Baltimore.....I didn't have good feelings about him

ahead of time, when i emailed him once and asked his

office 4 times how many DS surgeries he has done, and

noone would answer me. As it turns out, he presents

himself as doing the Duodenal Switch, his web site

says he does, his offic staff says he does, and a

video I watched before I met him says he does. In

actuality his surgery of preference is the proximal

gastric bypass. He states in no uncertain terms that

he does not believe in malabsorptive procedures. But

when I asked him, he said has done no DS surgeries to

date. (nada, zip, zero)......when I asked him where he

learned to do the DS he said that he had been doing

the gastric bypass and other gastrointestinal

surgeries for years and didnt think it was that

difficult to begin doing the DS based on what he'd

seen and read. In other words he did not have a

fellowship, and did not shadow another doctor or even

spend time training with a DS surgeon.

He seemed quite personable, although with no

experience in the DS surgery.....he will not do a

common channel less than 100......and he will only do

the DS on patients with BMI's of 50 or greater. Mine

is 57 and he would never consider doing it anything

but open. He clearly thinks he's qualified, and some

of you may agree with him. I just wanted people to

know if they were considering him, what his level of

experience was. Any questions, please feel free to

post here or mail me privately.

, good for you. I'm glad this doc is not one of your options, and thank

you for letting us know about his experience (or lack thereof) with the DS

procedure. I would hate for someone to walk into that without the knowledge

that he is inexperienced.
