I think it also probably depends on how ambulatory you are before surgery. If your BMI is lower, you're probably more ambulatory, which should speed recovery. However, it seems to be a YMMV kind of situation. (YMMV = your mileage may vary) I've asked the same question and gotten a variety of answers. My dream situation is to go back to work (I teach high school) about 19 days post-surgery; some people have said that's realistic (including the doctor's nurse), but others have said that it's not. I think that you have to plan on being out for about 6 weeks and then pray you're one that has a very speedy recovery. alyssa

Guest guest
--I have told work that I will be out for two weeks. Was that realistic? What has been your experiences? Thanks Dear , I went back full time to my office job (I am a CFO of a company) 11 days post-op. I was tired when I got home from work but otherwise did fine. Jane J. 230/169 (-61 lbs.) Guest guest
I hate to be a possible " downer " on this subject, but I think it's important not to " bet the farm " on being able to go back to work so early. I have a non-desk job requiring long hours and a lot of stamina, but after two pre-op discussions about it with my surgeon, we decided a 4-week period of being out seemed reasonable. This was what I counted on, therefore, financially, and what my place of employment counted on as well. Alas, due to continuing nausea, dry heaving, diarrhea, tenesmus, fatigue, out-of-control GERD symptoms, unpredicatble anal discharge of fats, etc., an early re-hosp for mild dehydration and post-op tests, I still have not returned to work and I'm **10 weeks** out now. Tried to go back at 8 weeks out, but only made it 3 half-days before needing to call in. This has been embarassing and frustrating beyond belief for me, and it's made it hard on my workplace to arrange for my duties to be covered. Slowly my body is adjusting and there has been definite improvement, but I still can't rely on having consistent symptoms I can successfully manage while attending to my tasks at work. My story is unfortunate, and I realize that it seems few people have these symptoms for as long as I have, but it *is* possible that something may keep you out for longer than a couple weeks, anyway. Esp if you don't have a desk job! A contingency plan for how to manage in case you need longer time out would be a prudent thing to have in mind. Just my 2 cents - - SC, frustrated and depressed with it all. ----- Original Message ----- > Hi -- I went back to my desk job after 11 days > (including the hospital stay) and doing ok. I think since we're all adults here....we all know there are no guarantees. I would have been in financial trouble if I'd had to be out more than two weeks...but I knew there was the possibility it could happen before I left. We all just have to think positive and take it as it comes! ~~* AJ *~~ Age 37 5'8'' Post op 7/24/01 Open BPD/DS self pay - Dr Baltasar -Alcoy Spain 07/24/01 BMI 64 415.1 08/06/01 BMI 59 390.2 -24.9 lbs! -10.75 inches 08/16/01 BMI 58 387.0 -28.1 lbs! -11.25 inches 08/24/01 BMI 58 386.5 -28.6 lbs! -15.5 inches 08/30/01 BMI 58 378.3 -36.8 lbs! -21.25 inches My personal website: www.WLS4AJ.homestead.com Check out the Bellingham Support Group at WWW.WLSBellingham.homestead.com

I think if you come thru without complications, and your job is a easy one such as sitting you could be back in 2 weeks....many of us have done it. ~~* AJ *~~ Age 37 5'8'' Post op 7/24/01 Open BPD/DS self pay - Dr Baltasar -Alcoy Spain 07/24/01 BMI 64 415.1 08/06/01 BMI 59 390.2 -24.9 lbs! -10.75 inches 08/16/01 BMI 58 387.0 -28.1 lbs! -11.25 inches 08/24/01 BMI 58 386.5 -28.6 lbs! -15.5 inches 08/30/01 BMI 58 378.3 -36.8 lbs! -21.25 inches My personal website: www.WLS4AJ.homestead.com Check out the Bellingham Support Group at WWW.WLSBellingham.homestead.com
