Guest guest
Noah is 4 years old and he is going into see a therapist on his speech and hearing in the next few months. This is my 3rd child and because of me having 2 older ones I noticed that Noah's speech was not as good as the other kids. All my friends have kids and one of them has a little boy who is just alittle bit older than Noah. His speech was bad because he always let his brother speak for him. In this family you speak for yourself or don't get heard, so I know that is not Noah's fault. I had speech problems and so did my twin sis, so that could be it. I have also noticed in the last couple of days my middle son ( jordan ) has the same problems sounding out some letters just like my sister. I think it's in the family. Well mine at least. lol JGOODIN wrote: is not babbling yet, and we will be starting speech therapy soon. Our cousin's little boy turned 2 in August and we are just now starting to understand words he is saying. They never started therapy with him, but I think I would have. It never hurts to have her assessed. Then you can choose to go with therapy or wait and see. 11/19/04 michelle wrote: Hello everyone. Guest guest
If you are concerned then you should definitely look into having her evaluated. Have you spoken to the pediatrician? If not, I would suggest starting there.he/she will have the number for you to call and get someone out there to check on her. We did it for my son and he has come a long way in the past 6 months. Feel free to email me anytime. michelle wrote: Hello everyone. I wanted to ask everyone if any of your children had speech delays? Guest guest
I have four children and the second one (my oldest son) had some speech delays, as well as motor delays. In every state of the US, there are programs which evaluate kids free under the age of three to determine whether or not they have delays which qualify for services. received speech therapy in-home with a good therapist and then, at the age of three, went on to be treated by a speech therapist in the local school district. It benefited him greatly. He turned five in October and is still receiving speech therapy. Not all kids need it for that long, though. Listen to your instincts as a mom. If you think your daughter is delayed in speech, then have it checked out. All the best to you, Carol Re: OT- Speech delays Hello everyone. Guest guest
Hi , I don't have any specific information to give you but if you ever have any doubts I would definitely taker her to a speech pathologist and get her evaluated. However, it could be the case of just a late bloomer, like my son with walking. I have to very good friends whos children didn't start really speaking until well after two. In fact, one of my friends little girls was actually diagnosed with Aplasia (I'm not spelling that right) but anyway she couldn't say any words except for one and they believed by the time the message got from her brain to her mouth the word was lost or distorted. But a few days after bringing home a new baby she began saying everything. My mom's neighbor little girl only said the word " Cat " till she was 2+ then all the sudden, talking non-stop. I know this doesn't really help but it does let you know that your little girl isn't alone. Maybe she's a deep thinker! :-) Hang in there it will come. But again, if you have some valid concerns get her tested. Best of luck to you and .. Hugs, Jenn michelle wrote: Hello everyone. I wanted to ask everyone if any of your children had speech delays? Guest guest
Stacee, I thought I was the only one paying for their services. It was free until a few years ago now we have a cost share thing. They evaluate your income and then decide what you pay. It's good to hear that New Jersey isn't the only one who makes people pay! It was really starting to look that way.but its typical of this state. _____ From: nosurgery4clubfoot [mailto:nosurgery4clubfoot ] On Behalf Of littleman1013 Sent: Friday, January 13, 2006 8:20 AM To: nosurgery4clubfoot Subject: Re: OT- Speech delays Both of my older kids are apraxic, which basically means that they comprehend everything spoken to them, but for whatever reason, they cannot form words/sounds/sentences/etc as a typical child can, so they are both in speech therapy. DS, who is 5y3m started speech therapy at age 19 months and is currently in the Early Childhood Program within the school district--a preschool program. DD is 2y2m and started speech therapy (in-home) at 18 months. They both were evaluated through Early intervention (EI) of Illinois. The program goes by different titles in each state, but most all states DO have the program. We don't qualify for free services, but they ALWAYS evaluate for free. We have gotten our evaluations and then chosen to go through our insurance because our BCBS plan actually has an EI benefit for age 0-3, and it's cheaper to pay copayments than the monthly fee bracket that our income puts us in for the EI program. In fact, we just had EI come in again, this time for , because he's got torticollis on the right side of his neck. They come to your house, typically with 2 specialties (developmental, speech, physical, occupational therapists) and evaluate your child. If your child has at least a 30% delay in any one category or a smaller delay in 2 or more areas, you typically qualify for services. They specialize in In-Home treatment, which is what I was looking for this time around because, if I could, I'd stay in my house 24/7 with the 3 kids now!! :-) I have realized that (at least until the kids are a little older) it takes me longer to get everyone ready to do most errands than it does to actually do the errand itself!! Crazy. Anyway, your pediatrician should have the contact info, or you might be able to find it online using a search for " early intervention in ____ " (your state) or " zero-to-three. " One last thing--My ped is awesome and willing to go off the parents' gut feeling, so he didn't fight me with a referral for services even though ds was really young when we started, but some peds do. I hope that yours is like mine because it definitely takes some stress out of the scenario! Hope this helps a little, anyway! Guest guest
, You can ask her pediatrician about the early intervention program for kids her age in your state. It is called ECI here in Texas but is federally funded so it is in every state but is just called a different name in each state. Guest guest
They come to the home and mainly do an eval based on a parent questionnaire. Generally, they evaluate speech and other skills, as well, so you get a big picture eval of your child's development. A hearing test is standard for any speech delays, as well. This is done by an audiologist in the office, typically. Good luck! Carol and Re: OT- Speech delays Hello everyone. I wanted to ask everyone if any of your children had speech delays? My son did everything when he was supposed to so I figured my second would also. How knows, maybe there is some truth to it. She too understands everything and gets her message through to us except for the speech part. Her motor skills are very good onlly she was a late walker. But that was due to 2 " bad doctors " . I'm excited b/c today she said her first sentence " Tie my shoe. " Which is exciting, I don't know maybe she is coming around. It's just she says them out of the blue and when you ask her to say it again she talks in her " language " again. Thanks for sharing. and Gerace wrote: , Its funny you said that. I thought the same exact thing! My son did everything when he was supposed to so I figured my second would also. Christian doesn't have any problems understanding anything and he doesn't have any fine motor delay etc. but he wasn't talking nearly as much as he should have. I also read that babies who DON'T put alot of things in their mouths sometimes have speech delays and the theory behind that is when they stick something in their mouth they are forced to move their tongue around and make different sounds. When they don't they typically keep their tongue in one position. I thought that was interesting. _____ From: nosurgery4clubfoot [mailto:nosurgery4clubfoot ] On Behalf Of MICHELLE ROSAS Sent: Sunday, January 15, 2006 12:14 AM To: nosurgery4clubfoot Subject: Re: Re: OT- Speech delays Thanks, you know I called EI but the counselor never called me back to set up an appointment. The girl I spoke said I think they have 2-3 days to call you. My son also was such a talker before age 2 and that is what made me concerned about her. She too talks in 1 word sentences but mostly in her " own language " if that makes sense. You I figured that since she had ME & her big brother, who by the way talks and talks to her and helps her pronounce words, she would be an early speaker. I guess that proved me wrong. LOL But I will get her tested just to be sure. Now if she could only get over her bronchitis... and number23 wrote: You know her best and if you think she needs an evaluation, I'd say go for it. But by the same token. my 1st born was an amazing talker with huge vocabulary before age 2, but his younger brother at this same age range still uses mostly 1 word " sentences " . Mom says 1st borns get so much more mommy attention it's not unusual for them to develop more rapidly compared to 2nd, 3rd, children. s. Re: OT- Speech delays Hello everyone. I wanted to ask everyone if any of your children had speech delays? My daughter just turned 2 and to me she is not speaking as much as she should be. I am getting kinda worried about her and I am even thinking about getting her checked out. She says a few words and when I ask her to repeat what I tell her she says something different. Sometimes she does repeat me but most of the time she just speaks in " her own language " ,kwim. My son was very vocal and spoke very young that is what surprises me. I know you should not compare but she is 2 years old and I feel she should be a little more vocal than she is. If anyone has any info I would really appreciate it! and BL CF 12/16/
Guest guest
I can soo relate to this. My son (first born) spoke early and clearly but he too is kinda clumsy and oooh that handwriting! And yes his sister has great motor skills too. I know it's not good to compare..I'm just wanting to make sure everything is ok with her and if she does need help, the sooner the better, right? and number23 wrote: with my 2 kids, the 1st spoke early and excellently but his motor skills lagged, and still do - he's the most clumsy thing and bad at hand writing, etc. But Everett who doesn't talk so much has excellent motor skills, he can drive nails with a real hammer and has for months! Every kid is just different and we need to be careful about comparing them too much. s. Re: OT- Speech delays Hello everyone. I wanted to ask everyone if any of your children had speech delays? Guest guest
Hi, so nice to have you in the group. I got a phone call finally yesterday evening from one of the counselors. Unfortunetly, both my son and daughter are sick so she could not be seen today but they will be here tommarow morning. She told me they would do all the info tommarow and do " some " evaluation but we need to do the whole income thing first. We'll see how it goes. I will definetly contact you if I have any questions if that is ok with you? and Lori Webb wrote: Hi there, I am a certified speech/language pathologist.
